Well, it probably wasn't his "daily" driver all that time, but still a pretty neat deal. I hope he had a child (or grandchild, kids are probably in their mid 80's) that continues the upkeep the car has obviously had so far.

He probably still has the car because he never let a woman tell him to get rid of it, therefore he probably doesn't have grandchildren. If he was married, he'd probably be driving some piece of crap toyota minivan.

And I think the Tommygun is the rear spring.

102? He looks about 80 in that picture. Must not have been married or had kids. I wish people were more like this today, cars seem to be almost disposable now. Hopefully the museum digs into his history, I would like to see these two through out the years.

I got a 56 Ford for my graduation. I'd go talk to my folks about this if they were still around.

  11. Great present and even better story!! Congrats to the guy! Couldn't imagine getting a car like that for graduation. What was the price on that back in 1928?

  12. What a story for the records, 102, a Rolls for graduation, one owner, wow, the truest of car guys! Thar tops this weeks story of Brett Favre and Cal Ripken records. I have owned my 67 Nova SS for forty years and last drove it in 1979 and that is my longevity story. The Rolls/Pops story can never be duplicated , a true piece of car history, I am enlightened. Thanks .:)

I got a project car, a 69 Camaro, and a 2 week trip to Paris France. No, I don't come from a wealthy family, my uncle was/is employed there and I got to spend 2 weeks walking the streets. I still have the trip in my soul but the Camaro was the start of an obsession that I also still have. I've often admired those who keep certain things but only when they treat them as this ol fella did. Thanks for the reminder, I too had seen it before.

  14. Hahaha.......... wth did I get.... ?????????

Cuff links... luxury pure luxury! I had to wear duct tape if I wanted sleeves!

    Well...it wasn't a cheap car.
Maybe his father just co-signed for him and it was taking him that long to pay it off...:D

  16. Wow. Cool story.
I still have the 6 horse 60 gallon air compressor I got for my college graduation.
It wasn't hooked up until 2 years ago- I graduated in '96. ;)

You're right, they did make Rollers in Springfield, MA, including the Picadilly. I've owned my Austin-Healeys for 35 and 30 yrs, I got a ways to go yet.

  19. I've owned my '66 Dodge for 31 years in April '11, so I am well on my way.

From the Springfield museam Site: http://www.springfieldmuseums.org/the_museums/springfield_history/exhibits/view/162-automobile_gallery

    Rolls-Royce of America, Inc.

In 1920 British automaker Rolls-Royce sought to establish a plant in the U.S. and Springfield was selected as the site since it boasted a high number of skilled craftsmen. Over the history of the company 2,944 vehicles were produced in Springfield. The Rolls-Royce automobiles on view are a single owner, 1928 Springfield-made Phantom I donated by M. Allen Swift and a 1925 Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster formerly owned by S. Prestley Blake, co-founder of Friendly’s.

    and some more info:
Benefactor M. Allen Swift was actually a West Hartford, Connecticut native who was very fond of Springfield. A fifth-generation gold beater, Allen was given a choice to either go to school or help his father run the family gold leaf business. If he chose the family business, his parents promised to buy him any car he wanted. Allen picked a $10,900, 1928 Springfield Rolls Royce. He owned that car 77 years, which put him on record as being the longest single owner of a British or Springfield-made Rolls Royce in the world. Allen lived to be 102. Two months before he passed away, he gave the car and a million dollars to the Springfield Museums. The money was to buy the building that now showcases Esta’s Indian Motocycle collection, the Smith & Wesson firearms exhibit, and Allen’s wonderful car.

  23. I'm bringing this back to the top for enquiring minds!

They wondered where the car was today?

I hope this answers their questions!

  25. Missed this on the first go round.
Very cool. The Roadster sure is big.

  26. Great story we won't hear again. BTW...wouldn't it look good with a dropped axle and chopped windshield?

  27. That Rolls kicks the hell outta my Honda Civic I got for graduation. And cost a lot more -- 10k!
Museum collection sounds good too, more than just the car.

    $10,900 in 1928 is roughly $145,500 today.

    My graduation present was a clock-radio. :D

    Doc.

    Great story
If the family had enough money to even buy a rolls royce, let alone give them as gifts, it was probably easy for the guy to keep it. Have a crew convert part of the horse stables to a garage, park it there, have the grounds keeper keep it waxed, if any thing goes wrong have the mechanic send a bill. I'm not hating on the guy, it's a great story, but he's in a different world.
