This is how I see glass cars.........Anybody can pick up a phone and order a body to build.

    [/ QUOTE ]

...and when that fiberglass body arrives in your driveway, all you have to do is sit in your lawnchair and water it once a week, and the car will build itself, right?

I see alot of cheesy 'glass bodied cars that might support your ideas to a point, and the ugly charicature rod bodies don't do a thing for me personally, BUT....

...that doesn't discount the fact that somebody still had to BUILD the car! If I see a cool rod that grabs my eye and draws me in for a closer look, I'm there to check out the details and see how well it's screwed together and get a better feel for it! If, at that point, I discover that it has a fiberglass body....so what?

Sure, I dig "real steel", too...but a cool car is a cool car...no matter WHAT it's made out of!

(How do ya feel about WOODIES? [IMG])

The bottom line is that cars like the Willys you poo-poo'd for having a 'glass body...even though it initially looked cool to you, still took talent and effort to BUILD. I'm sure the guy would have been happy to build it out of a cherry steel original body if you were willing to give him one! But, he elected to build his vision and then drive it...rather than scouring the Earth looking for the last unmolested steel Willys to build to your approval!

(For what it's worth, I'd rather do bodywork on steel...as I don't know shit about modifying fiberglass! I'm told it's easier, but having never done it...I respect the Hell out of guys who can build a 'glass car and make it look cool...and I'd gladly take the time to check out such cars and snap a few photos!)

Now...putting fake bird shit and airbrushing "rust" onto a fiberglass body is something else... [IMG]

Ok guys you all have valid points. I did'nt dtart this thread to create a debate over whats good or bad about or hoddy! I only started it to show you what I felt were the only two REAL traditional cars there.

You know this is hilarious, we have a topic here about two cars and now people are getting their panties in a wad BUT, we have another thread going about Volkswagens and all's well?!?!?!?! Oh well, whaat ever.......next time I'll keep my photos to myself. [IMG]

I'm not a real advocate of glass cars either, but of all the glass bodies that are available, I can accept the Willys easier that any of the others. I grew up in the Gasser era, and a lot of those bodies were glass, very poor quality at best and mostly for drag racing. 99% of the steel cars had glass tilt front ends, I wish I had a portion of the steel parts that were discarded! I guess everyone has their own opinion, but if I only enjoyed cars like the two pictured, I'd be pretty miserable. I really don't want to replicate that era, some of it was OK, some of it was all that was available. In my mind, bias ply tires sucked then, and they suck worse now!

Yea Hatch thats horrible.........just kidding. And no thats not a cookie cutter. That things nice.
Let me define what I think of as a cookie cutter car-32 highboy roadsters, some of the 32 3 windows, and even some 34's. I guess one reason why they turn me off is they are usually high doller cars, not the ratty ones most here like. [IMG]

  10. Now I know why The Hotrodladycrusr likes my roadster so much.

It must have something to do with all those great cookies she makes [IMG]

Thank God - I can rest tonight because you didn't include '23 T's or '32 5-windows as cookie cutter cars. I carefully watch your posts so I can tailor my car to your proclamations of what's cool, after seeing that delivery with Camaro mirrors and billit wheels, the Pontiac with the bolt on hood scoop, and the VW with pink flames. [IMG]

You must have a foot fetish as often as you put yours in your mouth.
May I suggest you change your name to Terry The Toad? Your posts give me a mental picture of Terry. You should put backup lights on your pants as often as you backtread from your proclamations. At least you're amusing - in a sad sort of way.

Just my opinion [IMG] (that is what this post is all about, isn't it?)

everyone's got their interpretations on what is COOL, and honestly, i have just as much respect for the guy that builds his own flathead powered steel bodied t-bucket as the guy who builds his own hot-pink pearl 57 chevy.
it all boils down to the fact that even if you don't like the car, atleast some individual built it...probably in their garage, slaving over it just as we slave over our cars.
if the hot pink and billet makes the those people happy, then good...my car will stand out even more at the local cruise nights.
believe it or not, when i first got my shoebox on the road and up to some of the local car shows, it was the "GOLD CHAINERS" who seemed to be the most welcoming and supportive. learned a TON of stuff from some of the guys with the ugliest lookin cars.

We've got a little Friday night drive in here on the west side of Wichita. I wasn't there but I guess there was a fight on the first one of the year. Imports vs. Domestic. It could have been Harley vs. Everything else or metal vs. glass. Who cares? Drive and build what ya like. Leave the other guy to do the same.

I really hate to say it but....it won't be long before you'll have to build fiberglass if you want to build. There is not many original steel bodies left from the early 30's and its getting worse for the 40's. I used to be against the fiber bodies but it would be far worse to miss out on seeing these rides...fiber or not.

P.S. 1low you should've come down to LA (Lower Arkansas) we didn't have many cars but we had one hell of a good time [IMG]

Man, I totally think that the term gold chainer is way over used anyway. Plus every time I hear (or see) it it reminds me of Tom McMullen. That cat used to roll into work in these crazy-looking gray leather jumpsuits and wore this fat gold chain with a huge cougar medallian on it. I don't think that Tom really fit the definition of a "gold chainer."

And I'll bet if one of you could get a hold of McMullens old chain you'd sport it to every show and show it off to all of your friends.

    Just venting

I actually think those pictures of the Delivery came with a wallet just like the ones of his girlfriend. I've never seen 1Load talk about working, driving, cleaning or ANYTHING on that car other than his INTRO AD. I'm so glad you've figured out all the catch phrases (rat rod & gold chainer) and learned to post "THOSE RATTY CARS" we all like so much. Here's a cookie for being a good boy and not posting all those stupid internet photoshop joke photos. By the way do you have the one with the kitten with the really big eyes or one with Osama Bin Laden with a rocket up his ass? I never get tired of those!

Do you have any other hobbies? Other than posting on the HAMB I mean?

I think the term "GoldChainer" has been abused as much as the term "RatRod".

They are the guys who built Streetrods (Yes I said Streetrods) In ther garages using jungyard parts way before 1800ubuybillet came along.

So next time you go mouthing off about GoldChainers Take a real close look at some of these old Hotrodders and you will see they Might not have flathead powered all steel 32 5 windows the meet the perfect HAMB critieria, but they are guys who did actually build there cars and drive them more miles than you may ever drive your car.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well said... my Dad has lots of friends that on outward appearances may be described as gold chainers. The real truth of the matter is that most of these guys have been building cars since they were teenagers and know more about cars than many of us ever will.

Back then, they drove "traditional rods" and over the last 30 or so years they've had all kinds of cars and followed all sorts of trends. When you are in the hobby to the extent that a lot of these guys are and you see sooooo many cars at events the ones that stand out the most are the ones that are the most different. Trad rods look different now because the high dollar billet rods are so common. Back when billet got popular, nobody else had it and so it stood out. Things go in and out of fashion, like it or not.

Another trend will come along and become popular just like billet did and you can count on that. We're also talking about money here.. when your 20 and struggling, you build what you can afford to build. When you spent a lifetime working hard like many of these old guys have you can afford to build or buy something you've always dreamed of and so many of them do. To me, the payoff of a lifetime love affair with cars and all the hard work that goes into them is being able to have your dream car in whatever form that takes.

Anyone who thinks you just bolt the body down and drive away in a glass car hasn't built one. Even the best need work. I know guys with real steel deuces who talk about the 1-800 glass cars now. But they mostly inherited theirs when a friend or family member passed away, bought it back in the 70's when they were cheap, or spent a wad and bought it pretty much the way it is today. Maybe updated the suspension to 4-bars or Mustang II when the old corvair box and tie rod ends wore out. Hell, most of them didn't pay as much for the car as what the grill shell is worth today. They didn't really do anything other than pick a painter and an interior guy and bolt up some aftermarket stuff. But, BYGOD theirs is REAL STEEL, right down to the brookville shell and Mac's fenders.

Then I know guys who built their cars ground up from the leftover crap we have to use today. These guys built cars 20-30 years ago and are still building them today. They cry when they see a grill shell bring $2K+ on E-Bay. They learned to weld frenching headlights and building motor mounts, not replacing lower quarters rusted away. They don't bitch about glass cars. They understand. Even a cookie cutter car is cool if the owner learned some skills and had fun along the way.

WOW- that must be a really boring existance because I choose not to waste much time commenting on ridiculous "I wanna be cool" posts any more. Thanks but I'll pass on the picture because I actually have a car, a real steel car- one of those "ratty cars" you aspire to own someday after you stop surfing the web and step away from the computer. My job puts me at a computer writing about hot rods 12 hours a day, what's your excuse?

My excuse is that I'm off work now and have been for six months and can not go outside and do anything in fear of losing my job. My computer is my only way of going insane.

It sounds to me that the fine folks at GGG need to give you a little more to do since your waisting valuable time on my ridiculous "I wanna be cool" posts......... [IMG]
