Were "lakes style" headers really lakes style?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kevin Lee, Feb 2, 2006.

  1. thats all true and descibes my lake style headers, in my opinion creating is so much more appealing to me than purchasing. But in defense of my reseach (you need to search harder Kilroy :))I did find pics of hot rods with lake style headers, but not that many at all maybe five pics out of a hundred. To tell you the truth i kind wanted to run pipes along the side to the back, but just didnt, but maybe in a few years I can for a change, but Deek welded mine together so well, that I love em.

Keep us posted on what you decide Kevin, I love to see progress and change, espcially with style and performance in mind.

What about using axle tubes from Banjo rear ends? Or is that part of the psuedo-traditional thing too?

Holy heavy headers! I used a '36 torque-tube cut in half. That's too heavy. I can't imagine axle tubes.

By far the coolest looking set of Flathead V8 pipes on the lakes was this set built by a guy named Furgeson for his Model A lakes roadster! His thinking was that the open front would create a "ram" effect at sppeed, forcing more air past the primary tubes and helping to draw spent fumes outta the cylinders.

Who knows how well it worked, but if I were building a lakes-influenced roadster, especially one with a flattie, I'd want a set of headers identical to these!

(That's true 1940's backyard rodder engineering there!!)

I agree. These are too cool. Who realy cares/knows if they help out or choke the fumes. It is a pair I have never seen before or after the pic in that book. Probaly worked like shit or no efect at all, since it's that rare.
Those where the days of the comon guys in charge of development. Today it's rocket science all the way.

No wonder we are dreamers....... :)
