Got this 32 style brookville dash for my 31 coupe. It came with a random piece of metal. Might be a dumb question, but what’s it for? I looked on their website and all the pics show it, but no mention of what it is used for.
    Thanks.

  2. it stiffens up the area of the dash lip if you mount your column mount to it

x2 I used the same dash. You will need it. Mock up your column. drill your holes for the column drop then tack in the stiffening piece and drill holes through it as well. then weld it in more solid.

A closely related question so I don't see this as a thread hijack - apologies if you do!

I'm working on a B'ville 32 3w. I've been agonising over stiffening the dash for the steering column and have been looking at welding in a strip that goes the full width of the dash, but that would interfere with the glovebox door mounting. But seeing the above I'm now wondering whether I might be overthinking what I require - a short section would be so much easier! What have others done??

  5. when i need to stiffen up something , i always think of "the power of a triangle". in the case of a steering column, dash stiffener i have always ran a support up and toward the top of the firewall. this creates the triangle. two supports splayed out towards the top from the column mount, create multiple triangles that really add some strength.
