Deuces, do you have any first hand knowledge of any original ET lll, like these, breaking because it was uni-lug?

I say 30x9 also. Always wanted to try that tire. Too big of a tire + short car = wheelie. Think about that. I understand your concern with your car the way it was at the HAMB Drags. That car was like it was on ice. But over tireing it I dont think is the best Idea either..... without a wheelie bar.

Considering these were run on Top Fuel dragsters and funnies, I'm thinking the engineering in the Uni-lug is sound.

Yep! Someone on another thread posted some pictures of a uni-lug wheel with damaged slots...
I had a Cragar fall off a car while cruising 25-30 mph...
The techs at the dragstrips don't allow those anymore... Can't say I blame them...

Just as I thought you don't have any knowledge of an ET lll uni breaking....................
If you keep the lugs properly torqued you should have no problems, if you don't you can and will have problems with any wheel made..............

  8. I was going to say the same thing.

I have seen a 8" mag on the back of ton's of dragsters running 8's even...

Buy a Goodyear or M&H slick... and it'll work just fine.

  9. New out of the box Torque Thrust "d"s are less than $200 per wheel

That's just it! I did have them properly torqued... The lugs on the right front wheel worked themselves loose for some reason.... Never again!
As I stated earlier, Some tracks won't allow you to run those... Have you seen the rule books lately???

Do you have pictures of this other than the magazine ads for them? I've seen the direct bolt E-T III racing wheels run but never the uni-lug version and mind you E-T redesigned thier uni-lug as pictured in the early 70's to include tapered inserts that fit in the back of the rim to increase the holding power of the lugs for normal use. E-T also made several series of it's wheels and got cheap on material over time.

I've never had issues with them but I do check the ones I run often and I'm not sure I'd advise most E-T wheels for anything other than a mild street car.

  12. My experience is that the US Indy is one of the lightest aluminum slots out there. I have a set of 15 X 8.5 and they are definatly lighter than 14 X 6 Appliance and pretty close to a 15 X 10 satin centerline. The 28 X 10.5 slick, tube and US Indy are also lighter than a 15 X 7.5 Ansen with a 235 X 70 tire on them.
I would rather have a US Indy in that size over the other brands for sure.

  13. OK. I hear you guys. I had sort of lined up to buy some MT 31/10.5-15s but that meant wider wheels. To much tire is an issue I wasn't really thinking about. I'd like to stay with a MT ET. Their 30x9 's require a 10" rim but the 29.5x9 work with an 8" and only give up a couple of inches in circumference.

So how soft of a compound do you think I should go with? I've seen the tire I want in M5 or L8

    MICKEY THOMPSON COMPOUND SELECTION CHART

    Medium--------------------------------------------------------Soft
    M7 M5 M8 R1 L8 L4

L4 - Soft compound for Dragsters, lightweight vehicles and vehicles without rear suspension.
L8 - Good compound for general use.
M5 - Good compound for general use.
M7 - Good compound for general use.
M8 - Aggresive Compound for Index Racing, Works Well in All Ambient and Track Conditions. R1 - Special Compound for ET Drag Radial

  14. OK, the only tire the size I want in the M5 is a stiff sidewall and I don't want that. Guess it'll be the softer L8. I think she'll like that.

I've seen stock elminator cars run the 30x9's on an 8 inch wheel.
I run mine on a 9 inch rim with no problem.
As for what compound to use give M/T a call they'll have pretty good idea.

  16. Here's a M/T 28 x 10.5 on that 8.5 rim I mentioned earlier, not a bad bulge on the sidewall.

For what it's worth, the Team III ET wheels use the shouldered lug nuts and you can order them drilled for 5/8" studs. I've had the 5 spokes on my coupe for about 8-9 years. Also used the unpolished 5 windows on a 7 sec dragster for 3-4 years, so they're plenty strong enough. It depends on what "affordable" means though and if its the look you want.

Kerry , looks like your gonna be building a wheelie bar next.

  20. Good point - all the pairs I've owned were drilled for standard shank lugs not Uni-lug - ET did definitely push the useability of the Uni-lug system but maybe hard core drag use was only shown in the ads?

Sorry for dragging the thread toward a slot mag FYI.

The thing about US Indy is that they also made slot mags intended for Vans Trucks and off road use. I've never had any in any size I'd call lightweight so maybe mine have been these where yours are standard issue for passenger cars? The pair of US Indy15x10's I have feel like a steel rim...The bead, hub flange, and rim areas are all thicker than any other mag type aluminum wheel I'm aware of.
