I am starting the mechanicals on my 32 3 W (ex hypotetical Deuce)....and am planning a blown 283 with a T10 out of a 65 Impala SS . I was wondering what kind of shift lever shall I use. I was looking on ebay and seems to me that 55/57 Chevy Hurst linkage and shifter would fit fine...but I have a body brace exactly where the shifter is supposed to stick out. ANy ideas?
    Thank you

If that shifter body will sit low enough, then the forward shaped U bend handle might clear.

That U fits above the floor in a tri 5 I think, to clear the seat, not the floor.

Take a look at dave50's 32 channeled with Olds and hydro, He has a problem with that crossbrace. Post #622 on the last page has a pic: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7916783#post7916783

  3. I used the 55/57 Chev Hurst shift lever on my Muncie in my 32 and it worked out perfectly.

There are two,the shifter made for a bench seat fits better for me.The shifter for buckets shown above is what I had,and had to make a piece that bolts between shifter and handle. This bent shifter ahead to clear seat.I also have a BB with fan so every thing is placed back 5,6 inches. You may not need that much with a sb.
I cut the brace out in my app and built a nice little rectangular box the same size as the boot.I used 3/4 inch square tube and turned out pretty clean.

My brother has a 55-57 Chevy Hurst bench seat shifter in his 32 5-window.
I used a Hurst shifter for a pick-up in my 3-window. (see pic)

in my 27 t the hurst shifter sat too tall and too far to the drivers side, so i made a new mounting bracket and bent the arms to clear each other, really dont be afraid to modify stuff it's really easy

Thank you for the help. Are Chevy T10 all the same, or is there any difference?

I have no pics unfortunately, but, i did pretty much what you plan.
    Built a 32 3 window with a blown 283 and 4 speed.
Although mine had a Saginaw 4 speed.
I used the typical Hurst Comp plus shifter, then made my own handle to clear what needed to be cleared.
Painted it after the bending and whatever welding i did was done, but could have easily had it chromed too. Just depends on how you want it to look. Cost me next to nothing and worked perfectly.

    Just another thought.

  9. Late thought here but you could do a top loader (3 or 4 spd ) and put a jeep cover on it and it will look like a Henry made trans like a 39. Sure would fool folks. That top loader should hold up well behind that engine.
Here is a link to that post FWIW.

Thank you for the top loader suggestion, but I live in Italy and am trying to use what I have here. Junkyards here are full of Fiats and can't find american stuff at the junkyard

  11. Hurst for a bench seat (curved handle) is what you want and you can work around the body brace as necessary.

I fabricated a bracket that mounted a hurst shifter over the top of my Muncie. I ran the shift rods back to intermediate shafts, then rods back to reversed shift arms (positioned downward). Shifts slick, and the only difference is I pull shifter back into reverse, instead of pushing forward. If interested, PM me for pics.
Your hypothetical coupe is a favorite thread of mine....nice job!
