What is that mounted to the top of the firewall? My first thought was a trunk or tool chest. Anyone know for sure what it is? Was it stock, aftermarket, home built?

I'm curious too! Toolbox is a good guess, or maybe an aftermarket heater gizmo.

  3. An afterthought for sure. I have no idea what it is though.

That is a tool box/storage box .I am not sure how many manufacturers there were but the name I have heard the most is Dunford Tool box . It was an aftermarket accessory for Old Fords ( maybe others ?) they are super handy for cars that have no storage space to speak of . I had one in our 33 Phaeton . It was full of all the tools/parts you need to travel with . [IMG]

Man ya gotta love the HAMB! No matter what it is; someone has heard of it, seen it, has one, wants one. It just amazes me. Anyone else have any more pictures of these?

I'd like to put one on my car but my firewall is recessed. I don't think it would look right. I'll make one out of cardboard and paint it black just to see how it works and looks. Thinking of putting the battery in there but I don't think it will fit. Time to go down to the garage and take some measurements.

I think you are close. Looks like a bread box to me.

It's a rattle trap :) Specially designed to drive you nuts as you listen to every little loose thing in it rattle as you drive down the road. :D

  13. Cowl mounted tool boxes were used in Australia. I've seen several and they can hold plenty too!

Hmmm; good point. I'd have to sound proof it somehow. Either that or pack it so full nothing can move. ;)

I was able to get a generator, fuel pump, distributor, water pumps, carb, bottle jack and a bunch of tools and misc small items in mine . Just wrap a few rags around stuff here and there . I heard no rattling from mine at all . I was happy to know I had everything I needed with me in case anything happened on our road trips . Of course , nothing ever did , she was a good cruiser .

As others have pointed out, it is a tool box. I had one on my 35 cabriolet when I bought it from Spain, I had assumed it was possibly home made as it looked fairly crap, like the rest of the car it was another thing that had been messed about with.
I cut it out, it was luckily only tack welded in.
I had not realised they were a relatively common thing.
    Please excuse rubbish photo.

I had one on a fourdoor I bot, couldn't get it off there fast enuff, then I wished I would have kept it, destroyed it getting it off the firewall.... thought it was homemade.

Specialized in Houston reproduced the Dunsford Tool Box for 30s Fords back in the 70s-80s and sold about 150 of them for something like $55 each. We sold them with attaching hardware clips and a copy of the original literature for them.

The one I had was bolted in place . Three 1/4-20 bolts . Easy to remove and only 3 small holes left . I pulled it off once to clean the firewall under the box and installed it again . It was on rubber pads also so no chafing .
I really liked it but I let it go with the car . I would like to find another for my 36 Cabriolet since there is not much extra room with the rumble seat in place and operation .

  21. Jim: Very interesting, glad you brought it up. I had not seen or heard of them until now. BTW..have you resolved your radiator issue? Tim

Yeah I got it sorted out. I notched the cross member and it still wasn't enough so walker sells a 2" shorter version. Going to order one later in the week. Looks like I will have a stock walker up for sale soon to try and recoup my losses. I must have measured wrong or something. After notching the cross member the radiator was 1-1/2" taller. Even my buddy came over and said "No that cant be" sure enough the splash aprons were up off the frame 1-1/2". Had me scratchin my head. I'm back to work now so not as much time for the rod plus I'm nursing an ingrown toe nail so not getting around too good. Dr's in the morning (this oughta be good). That tool box is neat as hell. I just don't think it would work out for me because my firewall is recessed. The wife thinks it's kool too. I think I'm going to do the cardboard box thing and see if it works and if we like it it may happen. Just add that to the list of things to do.:D
