I am doing a cowl top and am wondering how you did the 'rebate' where the cowl joins the firewall. I am thinking of making the hood offset seperate and welding it to the cowl, after shaping, as a seperate strip.
How are you going to do yours?
    Thanks, oj

Here is the quote explaining the "rebate" for the hood.

  3. David I also would like to speak up and say how I love coachbuilding as with everything else the old way is fading and is always so more interesting to see happen (not as impressive to watch a 300 ton press make a fender with one swipe). Thank you for sharing I don't say much but I am learning much.

A 300 ton press is pretty impressive to watch but the tooling cost would be a none starter for one off panels or even small batches. Being able to hand form stuff opens a whole new world.

I was thinking about buying your video, is the second one your working on the next step from the 1st one? By that I guess the qst one is basic skills and the next one more for advanced metal shaping?

    Thanks.

  6. Neither did the original 1927 locks I installed in my original 1927 doors. I think they used a number of different types from different suppliers.

The first DVD is basic skills but shows many things that I use every day in my work. I show how to throw flanges, create wire edges, how to metal finish, lead load. I show welding with gas, Mig and tig. There are sections on creating swages (beads) for parts like floor pans. How to shrink and stretch without a machine. I show several real world repairs. Everything on the DVD is done with hand tools only, no machines.

The second DVD will show some more hand skills and show how to create many
different panels with a variety of methods including using a wheeling machine. I will show just what can be done with small hobbyist machines with the right techniques.

I think I'll stand in line for also ordering the second DVD. Can you show a little more detail on how you formed the swage around the perimter of the inner door skin. I have been trying to do the same on a pair of 2 longer than standard 28 A Ford doors.
    Thanks

Michael, I did the swage on a pullmax with some simple tooling but it would be possible to do it using hand tools. It depends on if you have put the curve into the door frames how you should go about it. Let me know and I will explain what I think would work.

I tried to do these with a bead roller and form the additional flanges as separate pieces to be welded in along the edge later, so had used the shrinker - stretcher to try and put the curvature in the inner frames before the extra pieces were welded along the edges. My lower corners were added in a similar fashion to yours also. I have cut a new pair of blanks to try again, but would like to try and make some tooling to use in my vibroshear machine.

Michael I will take some photos of what I made for the job and post them for you. I made tooling for the Pullmax because I may well make more of these bodies.

Hey David - Just wanted to add my voice here to say how much I appreciate and respect your talent and taking the time to post it up for us. I know how you fee about not getting enough feedback, but there's probably MANY guys like me, watching and not commenting, cause we don't want to busy up your thread. Your skills are awesome! I wanted to buy your DVD too - but does that price include shipping? Comes out to $60 CDN...

So thanks again for the lessons and inspiration!

I agree that with the exchange rate the DVD is a little pricey but I don't regret buying mine. It is one of the best ones I have and I review it pretty often. Worth the money. Rusty.

    I agree with Rusty..
I don't recall the final cost but I am very pleased at somewhere less than $65CDN to my door.

There were some things I knew, some I know better now seeing the video and some things I hadn't seen before.
David has a straight foreword way of explaining and showing things that I found easy to learn from.
And it's one of those videos that you want to watch a few times because each time you see something you missed last time.

Now if life would stop kicking me so I can get back bashing tin on a project I would be happier.

Micheal, I am very sorry, it is quite a while since I looked at this thread I did not realise you were waiting for photos. Here is a photo I just took of the tooling I made. Quite crude but it worked. I will probably improve it if I make more of these bodies. The bottom tool was an existing tool made for another job (it has a mirror image top tool) The top tool has the 'nodule' which fits into the small swage (bead)

    I hope this helps!

Hi guys, sorry I have not been on here for a while, too many other things taking up my time, I am trying to get the workshop sorted out a bit and catching up with some customer work that I am behind with as well as doing stuff with my family something always has to give!.

Thanks for the comments about the DVD, the cost in US dollars at todays exchange rate is 57.394584 USD This includes packaging and airmail postage. It comes out at 59.000863 CAD (Canadian dollars). Sorry I did not get back to you sooner.

Thanks for the comments on the thread as well, it is nice to know that people are reading. I hope to get back on with this in about a month. I had several customer jobs grow way beyond what they were booked in for and I have just had to put the hours in to get through it all.

Thanks for subcribing Scooter. I hope you liked the DVD. Thanks for the complement about my youngest daughter she loved her prom. I have two daughters as well. The oldest is away at university but still takes up my time. I spent the day with her in Chelsea (London) where she was photographed for the front cover of a magazine a couple of Saturdays ago. The mag came out today here is a link (nothing to do with cars) http://www.thedebutmagazine.co.uk/dm/TheDebutMag.html
