I was out & about with the Ford yesterday, come to a light at an intersection, I was going straight, the guy hanging a left was driving a very low '30 or so Ford hot rod. That was very cool.
Your story kind of reminds me of the time about 20 years ago when my Dad and I where tooling up I-35 on our way to Back to the 50's in my '29 Coupe when we passed a group of 4 or 5 restored Model A's like they were standing still. We had a good laugh at them puttering along in stockers. They probably cursed about us having hot rodded one.
Binger, Here are a few pictures of my ride. I tried to sample a couple of views. It is built on a Model A frame pretty much from a slew of Ford parts but did use a Tardel K member. It has a 8CM flathead. If there is something you want to see better let me know. Btw: the Dilly bars got home before they melted.
Looks great. Thanks for posting a few pictures. Cool set up with your speedo. What material did you use for the top? I don't like the stock long grain stuff used originally.
Thanks! Top material is a Haartz cloth type of fabric. Interesting stuff as it has a membrane material sandwiched between two fabric layers. I wanted a grey/silver color and picked a color that had a matching hiddem available though it was not needed. I looked at several colors so can't remember for sure what brand it ended up being. Like you, I was not thrilled with the stock A stuff. Doing one of these tops from material without a kit is quite an undertaking and the person I used, Laurie Edwars, did a wonderful job.
This is Mrs. Avater. Just want all of you to know Mr Avater loves this group and his hot rod. He is as hot as his car. Thanks!
Love them Butterscotch Dilly Bars! Loved stopping on the way home @ the DQ from Main Street Grammer school circa 1956-62 Denville, NJ
Gooford I know where Denville is! Have relatives in the Morristown area. Kind of bummed they were out of the mint kind that evening. Still worked out fine.
Yea Denville was a nice place to grow up My first Car was a 30 A coupe with a 4 banger with a Mordrop front axle, 48 ford brakes and a '54 ford hanging brake MC. Got the axle thru Pete Van Iderstein when he shared a building with Tony Feil in Hanover 1962 My dad& I went to GI salvage in Pine Brook to get the '48 brakes & spindles. It was learn as you go, no such thing like today where information is at the touch of a keyboard My Dad tried to talk me into getting a 40 ford coupe (he loved those cars) I wanted an A, now I drive that elusive '40 he loved so much good times learning to turn the wrenches, never paid anyone to do the job for you that's how I learned, sorry off topic but it's a trip down memory lane
Hey, HAMBers, I don't know anything about Model A's, but was wondering if a '29 coupe could be made into a Special coupe ? And, what about converting a Sport coupe into a Special coupe ? Decades ago in South Texas, there were many Model A Sport coupes that could have been bought for a song, but every swinging d!(& wanted a coupe, sedan, or roadster. Hindsight is truly 20/20. Personally, I have never seen a Special coupe, and I am 70 yrs old. Most Sport coupes became hacked up coupsters, then went to the boneyard, or used as patch panels. What a waste.
Converting a standard into a special coupe would be a huge job. The special is loaded with about twice the wood of a standard. I like to think of it as a special is a wood frame town the tins nailed to the frame. A lot like how Fischer built bodies for Chevys is the era. Where a standard A is metal frame that has wood in it to tack upholstery to. If you have a standard top section I think you can fit them to the rest of the body.
That's above my pay grade. Maybe you could create a faux version by giving a regular coupe a fabric covered roof ala the vinyl roof of the 60s and 70 s.
Dilly Bars? My dad owned a DQ back in the early 60's. I did not know they still made Dilly Bars Anyway tell the owner I keep a sawzall idling all the time just waiting for an A roof! And I am in CT.
Hi AVater.Like the old song says"Its a small,small world".Nice ride too. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
The tops on the early Model A's, 28 and 29, are bolted on. Complete roofs/tops for a standard coupe carry some value so a trade for a special should not be difficult. I am not sure what it takes for a sport coupe but am guessing it is similar. Neal
