You can’t overdo a beautiful tradition like Sombrero hubcaps on a Merc! This is my 51. ;)

    Hello,

I drew a custom Mercury for the Friday Art thread. The suicide doors and a complete chopped hardtop make up the custom car. But, for the wheels, no mags or chrome wheels, but simple Dodge Lancer 4 prong hubcaps. Some newer mods versus the old style Dodge Lancer 4 prong hubcaps is a good mixture for the Mercury.

We used to see plenty of lowered Mercury sedans rolling around the So Cal area. Most were lowered with varying degrees of customization, upholstery, side pipes, different grilles, some chopped, but rare for the daily drives on the streets. The chopped ones were in the local car shows. The Oldsmobile three prong flipper hubcaps were also very popular, too.

For those that like blackwall tires with the Dodge Lancer Hubcaps… here is another version. With different style of rear skirts, only a portion of any hubcaps show, while standing or moving down the road.

The hubcaps with the outside snap are later model like 1952 I believe, they will fit on stock 1951 Mercury wheels without any modifications but they are not the true sombreros. The ones on my car are the ones with the inside snap you have on the lower picture. They need to be modified to fit on stock Mercury wheels. The inner cap has spot welds that need to be drilled out to remove it and then a beauty ring can be welded to the hubcap.

  8. Thank you!
Thats my second choice when i don’t like the 54 Merc Covers on my car. Maybe i can glue the beauty rink with some industrial polyurethane stuff.

The Lincoln caps would look great.

Mid 50’s Merc caps are the coolest IMO because they give you the best of both worlds combining the Sombreros and the Caddy caps PLUS they have the Merc Man logo in them! Paint the red part on these to match or offset the body color and they are a killer Choice…I am a little biased though!

My dad preferred the Fifty-four Chrysler New Yorker wheel cover. (but he never had a mercury to my knowledge.) i had stock hubcaps on mine.
