Technical What are these skirts called?

I have 2 different types of skirts for my shoebox the ones that have the 3 lines and don’t fit flush and a smooth set that fit flush. Both are metal although the flush set are much heavier. What I would really like on it are these skirts pictured but I don’t know the name of them to search for them. On the banana split they were fibergl*** and he had to do a lot of work to make them fit. Does anybody know what they are called to be able to search for them to buy a pair?

 

Cruiser skirts.

 

Here the first speed-bump would knock them off.

 

Bubble skirts. Cruiser skirts don't have that pointy forward shape. Bubble skirts like these are sometimes called "Jimmy Jones" style, after a guy who used to make them.

 

I call them loaded diaper skirts.

Most but not all skirts, but these now head my list! But that's okay for you, it's your car and I truly hope to be enlightened when you post pictures after you're "skirted".

Yeah, but a normal style skirt does'nt hang down way below the sill . The yellow car you posted the skirt starts low and a good 10 inches before the wheel. That does'nt look handy for a city speedbump , specially if you have p***engers.

For some reason I have always liked them. I like skirts anyway whether it’s the female’s wearing them or on a vehicle they just look good. I could never ever put a set on my 40 though. A 40 Ford Coupe was a work of art straight out of Detroit

 

I see your point now. I never thought of it in that way before. And what are they usually on? A lowered vehicle

 

That was my 66 650 BSA with the solid foot pegs. If you took it to low you knew it sparks would fly.

I took the skirts off my “bullet” bird…

 

“Skirts” had their origin in the 20-30’s on expensive cars to start bleeding down to the lesser models like Chrysler/Desoto Airflows. Customizers in the late 30’s early 40’s loved them.

Ford motor company listed as options or std on some models “Rear Fender Shields” mostly from 1949 thru 1956 and were a very common.

In 1957 they made them full length for a Mercury model named the Turn Pike Crusier and they a quickly became known as Merc Cruiser. This lead to many after market to manufacture large cover for more than just the wheel opening.

You either loved them or hated them…..I took them off my 56 Ford when I lowered the front for slight rake… it’s the style I like.

I think (who cares?) the best-looking skirts are ones that fill the "holes" made to service the rear tires. And the very best are the ones that have smoothed out the contour of the lower back sheet medal. The best ones are the ones that have modified the opening of the lips (if there is one) of the surrounding sheet metal.
