Had a friend text me a picture of these from an auction yesterday and I gave him my price so he bought them. Got them home and I don’t think they are what they first appeared to be. Was told they were 15x6. They are not. The center caps (International) also don’t appear to fit correctly. Wheels are 15x4.5 with mismatched 5.60 and 6.0 x 15 tires (good for display only). No brand markings of any kind on the wheels. One very small erosion area on the back lip of one wheel (way smaller than a dime) otherwise very nice shape. 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. I also think they are magnesium. Filed a small bit of material around the inside of the center hub hole on the backside and it flares when a match is put against the pile of filings. Vinager also foams when poured on that pile of filings. Anyone know the brand? Thanks, SPark
those are awesome front runners.......have you seen what narrow 15" wheels go for on "the auction site"? waaaay more than 6" wide ones.....score!
I quoted my buying price off what the center caps said and that he told me they were 6" wide. Very happy to see the caps didn't fit and they were only 4.5" wide. SPark
That was my first thought I had after seeing them in person. All the other American's I have ever had had the name cast in the backside. These have no name anywhere on them. SPark
You scored big. With these, there's no "paying too much," just buying too soon. Wait ten more years...
I had a set and no name cast in them either. To my knowledge, American is the only one who made a 15x4.5 wide in magnesium.
Found a man that wanted them for a period correct project. He now has them, maybe you'll see them when he posts updates to his project. I would rather see somebody use them than sell them to somebody that's looking to resell them for big bucks. Consider it a happy ending. Paying it forward! SPark
Yep, American Racing. Aluminum wheels usually marked prominently on back, magnesium little or no markings other than a few small dates, or foundry codes in back of spokes.
Get some Gibbs Brand on 'em to stop the oxidation. It's good to know there are some still out there waiting to be found.
