What are used 9 inch rearends going for?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dubbzilla, Mar 8, 2012.

  1. I've been on the hunt for a while for an original, complete, narrow, early 9 inch rear with a locker or a posi and 355 gears.

Managed to find a couple of complete setups, without posi, and no backing plates or brakes for around $300-350.

I've also tracked down one used third member with an original locker...$350 for just the third member.

Just got another call tonight....$800 for a complete rear, minus backing plates and brakes...355's with a posi. Original rearend, but the guy says the posi should be good?

Is that worth it? What's the going rates? Seems steep to me, considering I could get a one wheel peel rear for $300 and plop a brand spankin new powertrax locker in there for $500...then I know what I've got and traction will never be an issue.

    What do you guys think?

  2. Sounds about right. I just sold one complete, drum to drum but the gears needed work. Got $200 for it.

Bought my 59 Ford rearend (open diff. but complete) for $250 from a little known yard. Bought a posi unit at the swap meet for another $200. Going to buy the gears I want for about $150. So it will end up costing me $600 for the rear that I wanted and I know it's all good because I rebuilt it myself.

Not sure where your going to find an original "narrow" one though, most cars that had the 9 were the bigger cars...with a few exceptions. Getting them without the brakes gives you an opportunity to put disc on it, if your willing to spend the money...and want it. I would search the bone yards for a mid 70's T-bird with the 460 in it. Not sure of the ratio, but they were 9inch posi with factory disc....and you could get the M/C as well.... Good luck on what ever you find, but even the Ford Racing posi units new are 500...

  7. Yeah, narrow was hard to find...but all of the ones that I've "narrowed" down for my options are a**** the narrowest factory 9 inches...early mustang and early bronco is what they came out of....around 1965-1967

And I'm guess I'm just worried about spending that $800, then a year down the road having to spend another $500 to replace a worn posi.

    Make sense?

I just bought a 57 Full size no posi for 250. Older hot rodder was selling has spares. I bought the last one. He sold 12. He was asking 300 and gave me a dirty look when I offered him 250. Said some one was supposed to pay more. It is going in my Falcon project.

Pre 1978 bronco are probaly the cheapest narow 9 inch at 57" drum to $400- $500 is a good deal only came stock with 28 spline axles. The cheapest is to cut down a F 150 housing salvage's around here get $150 up depending on open or limited slip most are 31 spline. Cut to fit 31 spline axles around $250. Don't over look pick up bed trailers Ive seen the them sell for less than the axle under them is worth.

Just thought I would mention to be aware of the height of the spring perch on the 57,58 Ford narrow rears.

There are at least two sizes that I am aware of. Probably due to the 31 spline rears being in the Edsel wagons and the 28 splines being in the T Birds.

    "original" / "complete" / "narrow" 9 inch?

Original for what car? With the qualification "narrow" that would mean a '65-'66 Mustang. Or a '59 station wagon.

If you are looking for a 9" with a minimum width OEM, you are looking for:

    '65-'66 Mustang 57.25"
    '57-'59 Ranchero 57.25"
    '66-'77 Bronco 58.00" Has 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern
    '77-81 Versailles 58.50"

They keep going up from there, all the way to 68 inches wide.

1980& up Versailles had disc brakes on the rear if that helps.

So what exactly are you looking for?

    B.

  13. I'm looking for any of the ones you just mentioned...because they all meet my needs....]"original" / "complete" / "narrow" 9 inch

Just factor in the cost of a rebuilt center section into the price for any used posi rear, unless you are buying from a friend that knows the rearend.

I bought a 80's bronco 2 that i was going to turn into a trail rig and the guy had front and rear axels out of an early bronco that he threw in for another 40 bux. the axels have 4 10 gears in them but no lockers.
check the 78-79 bronco's as they came as a factory option with 410 gears with posi in them. 70's lincoln continentals have disc brakes on them.
the option i would look into is the 8.8 rears out of the mid to late 90's ford explorer's with the 5.0 as they came with disc brakes and have posi trak and some different gear set ups and they are more readily available.

just make sure you buy from someone with integrity and have recourse. I bought a 3:50 Trac Lock chuck on evilbay and a couple months later went to install it. It wasn't rebuilt, it was the wrong ratio and was put together using mismatched worn and broken parts. Took it to Wzorek Differentials in Agawam Ma. and they rebuilt it right. Carl is a great guy and the wizard of diff's - shame on me for going elsewhere

That's because you are in So. Cal.? Up here in my area, any complete 9" will go for about $150.

Turbo Coupe 8.8's either had 3.55's or 3.73's, depending on ****** type.

I don't know, I did not want them, its easier to order the right length from Currie and put it in. He kept asking me for every car I was building and I kept telling him no. Guess thats why he gave them to the s**** metal guy then to me..........hahaha

You can find them real cheap around here. My father in law has been buying every early bronco he can get his hands on for the past 20 years and has a pile of rearends. Allso a old yard here that no one knows about has some cool stuff. Just find a old farmer or rancher around here and will probably let you have it if he has one.

If you use the explorer 8.8 you can have rear disc, 31 spline and limited slip. If you used two p***enger side axles and shortened the driver side tube you end up with
56 3/4" wide. It is really cheap for what you end up with. At the local pull a part if you get two p***enger axles and put it in the drivers side before you leave it is less than $100

They were pretty cheap here locally before s**** went though the roof and now the craigslist asking prices start at 100/150 for an open rear and go up to five or six for a car unit with Posi.

  29. You guys are lucky, around here a rebuilder starts for $500+ up to $1200ish for a reasonable open centre. You don't get to many choices here.

my last three were given to me,, that said I did cut the housing myself and have the axles done for $150. I have a small selection of gears and I am not building race cars. usually put discs on them( I am a brake freak)
