I have a friend with a very cool old roadster that says he willed it to a neighborhood kid. Divorced with no kids, the kid really liked the car and came around to help out. I'm not sure the kid even knows.

I thought about the video camera in the garage with commentary about values today. I'll recommend that they get an automotive auction co. to come in and take their cut. Maybe then they will understand that I wasn't spending their inheritance but actually boosting it.:D

I might request them putting an old gauge or valve cover in the box with me like the Pharaoh's.:D

Dang, if it came out of a river pretty much anywhere in this good old USofA that old carp has more chemicals and heavy metals in it than who knows what. Gotta be a fortune in that fishes belly.

Well, I've already told the kids to put me in the oven, and take my ashes back down to Arizona, to be with the Mrs and our dog, who have went on before me. So when you see a dust devil down there, you see the ole "HellRaiser" still stirring it up.:D

I am not a lawyer, but without a will you could be in for a heap of probate costs when your parents pass on. The lawyers and the gov't will be very happy. You won't.

Hate to say it but I think most kids today would sell it all and buy a "tuner car."
    It's a generation thing.

When I become a bag of bones my wifes headaches will only begin. She will have more friends than she ever dreamed of.

When I die Nothing. My 2 kids will have to deal with it. And if Barn find are still popular they should make out pretty well. My shop is in a barn.

  8. This situation did happen in our family about 3 years ago. My father-in-law died unexpectantly. My mother-in-law had already passed. He used to race fuel altereds in the 60`s and had a garage full of old stuff, parts, tools, etc... His 3 son`s are not car guys and I am the only son-in-law and of course, a car nut. I got all the most of the stuff in the garage, but we had to sell the more valuable things to pay for the funeral. We had an estate sale and sold everything in the house. The auction was the best idea. People pay crazy prices for old crap.

  11. You have to decide whether or not your "survivors" are worthy to benefit financially from your hobby when they showed absolutely no interest in it while you were alive, or the to let someone who would truly apprciate the stuff for what it is have it cheap...

I think I'd rather let my buddies who understand have it cheap... I think I'm just going to make a a batch of labels that have the HAMB URL on it and mark on it a dollar figure about 25% what it's worth.

Then I'm going to have them bury me with my ass sticking out of the ground, so there's a place to park my bike.

Daughter gets the truck, son gets the shop tools, they can sell or keep the rest. They know or know who knows what it is worth.
I'm cleaning out anything that isn't earmarked for a specific project in the spring as I have too much stuff that I just kept instead of hauling off to the swap meet to pay for goodies that I could use.
I agree 100% on having a will and instructions for what to do with stuff and a list of what the good stuff should be worth or where to find out.

First I want all my buddies to throw a big party -- then my cars will go to my son who also loves cars and is getting in to the hobby big time.

My wife tells me regularly that if I die and leave her all my car stuff she'll follow me and haunt me for all eternity. As we have no kids to leave stuff to, my goal is to sell everything as a retirement sort of hobby, but I do point out things to my wife regularly of what things are worth in the event of an early demise. Regards, Marv

  18. you guys that have kids/family that have no interest in cars think they won't want them after you are gone are WRONG.....they will want the money they are worth

that's what it all has to be in writing in a legal will

for you guys with really lots of toys/money/assets.....keep in mind that 2010 is a good year to die

Having been in the antique buisness for years and having gone to hundreds of estates sales, I'm making sure my wife and kids know what is junk and what is valuable, labeled it too. I also taught them how to use ebay and contact an estate sale agent. The kids can have the cars if the want them, if not they can sell em on ebay. Some scrap guy will probably get the stuff no one wants.

I plan on living long enough to sell most of it myself as I expect that's how I'll eat when I'm old if I outlive my 401k funds. Not expecting much from uncle sam there.

Well if any of you old guys....I mean older gentlemen, need a loving gearhead daughter to leave your stuff too you can count on me to fill the position and help out in any way possible. You KNOW I'll take good care of everything and your cars will get driven on a regular bases.:D

For me, I guess my one and only nephew is going to end up with everything, except I am going to leave my hot rod scrapbooks to the Speedway Museum in Lincoln, NE.;)

I hope that my 2 y/o son follows into "some" of my automotive footsteps as my 15 y/o step son has no interest at all....
Between the equipment, tools & my 46 ford cpe., 66 chev II & an old factory 72 Rayson Craft GN boat I hope he will enjoy at least 1 of them - the rest he can sell off & enjoy the cash - I'll be in the ground.

  23. The deuce truck I'm building for my dad will pass thru me to my son (good reminder its not in writing yet), and I've got another daily driver truck in mind for him to abuse. My wife has specific written instructions to offer all the rest of my crap to a few good friends for whatever they offer. While my wife has some appreciation for my hobby, she really has no interest/time/talent in keeping 1930's - 1950's vehicles on the road. If my friends low ball her thats on them and their Carma.

I hope my wife wants my stuff, by law it's 1/2 hers anyways. (LOL) the cars, parts, and assorted stuff my two boys are all ready joking who gets what. My wife kinda knows what some things are worth, the rest my friends said they will help take it off her hands...

I do have a will ... and my wife gets everything ... She says she will keep both the 32's ... :) and sell off the Harley stuff.

She loves to travel and enjoys going to the car events and such ... :D
She says she will be using the 32's as a dowery to catch herself a younger, more active, better looking YOUNG MAN .

In the event of my death, my wife KNOWS which of my friends would try and weasle stuff from her & which ones wouldn't. Beyond that there's always Ebay.

  27. trouble is around here..
my good $$$$$buck manifolds /carbs/ wheels.. MAY be next to a box .50 cent leftover garagesale crap
'"the old stuff ' is according to" the kids "is just "old stuff?"
if i did go "tag"everything with current value.. or even what i paid .. who would care... they would sell it all or dumpsterize everything to get it gone

i hope some of my skills in organizing like
car titles in a binder with pics
most good stuff in the vicinity of the car it belongs to
my collectible Eames furniture all in one room at the cabin
vintage memoribila boxed and stored safely
hundreds of car magazines sorted and stored in quality file cabinets
my telling BEST car friends and KNOWLEDGEABLE relatives that
I REALLY HAVE GOOD THINGS(despite my eccentricity ) AND IF I DIE THEY SHOULD....(enter list here)

AS LONG AS MY LOVED ONEs CAN KEEP / SELL /PART WITH AMICABLY MY LIFE "PILE" AND CONTINUE TO STAY TOGETHER AS A FAMILY AND BE HAPPY THATS WHAT WILL MATTER..

the grandkids have just now shown an interest in my old cars/stuff(old Hot Wheels for example) so's theres hope....

I have had the dream of being on my deathhbed room full of loved ones when some family member asked "What about all his stuff"...
It was then I bolted upright and said
'" Fuck all of you.. I am taking it all with me start diggin a bigger hole!"

and the story overheard at a swap meet last year where two very elderly guys asked if they had made it to such and such's funeral and each said no ..
the one says that maybe he should combine his wake with a swap meet of his stuff ... more freinds might show up and his car stuff will go to good homes... the other guy says 'sounds good "... and then asks "hows he feelling today ?"'cuz he really would like to have his roadster to drive yet before the snow flies."

Randy, makes sure she has my number before you go so she can call me and us girls can hook up at car events, or doing some cross country road trips together looking for young hot car dudes.:D

  29. I have found I don't have enough time for weasels as friends. I have a short list of friends I hang around with, we are all a low maintenance bunch.

  30. Have told my wife to contact my older brother [if he's still around] to help dispose of anything she and the kids don't want. My louver press will be offered up first to one friend and he will also be asked to help set value and dispose or buy any other junk left around.
