Thought I'd start up a new business, develop it into some sort of multi-national economic power, buy an island in the south pacific and retire a billionaire. But I'll probably just spend it all on candy and gum.

I'm another one sending it right back in taxes. Appears the majority are doing the same.

I read about this "economic stimulus check"...its not free money. I read on MSN that this check is basically next years tax refunds just advanced to us. So be wary with what you do with it. I havent decided on my options for it yet, but Im sure its not going to be anything too enjoyable.

I dont want be a killjoy or anything, just looking out for the fellow HAMBers that may not know.

redoing one bathroom with one check (tile floor and all), landscaping the front yard with the other ...

investing in what makes money i guess... but its better than happy meals and fingering herpes chicks at the strip club!

Just heard a story on pubic radio about a couple that were waiting for the check to arrive. They have a sub-prime mortgage and were hoping to put the money on the loan. Instead of a check, this Arizona couple received an Air Conditioner sent to them by Uncle Sam! I'm not shittin! This is not April Fools joken! The government wants us to spend the money on goods to boost the economy. They conducted a study to see who would likely mis-spend the cash. So instead of sending the check they are sending out goods! It will be interesting to see who gets a check and who get a paper weight!

Careful boys, don't count them chickens....

  24. Hellfish and Gulfsubwarvet, you're mistaken in saying the stimulus checks are taxable. They are not taxable. It is possible that a state or states individually could pass legislation to tax stimulus payments paid to their residents.

TBirdgirl, nothing in the Act that enabled the stimulus payments plan makes the stimulus payment an advance against any refund otherwise due for any future tax year.

It's curious though, that a payment sometimes described as a rebate is paid to those who never paid in, while it's simultaneously not paid to any taxpayer who earned 'too much' and paid a lot of taxes.

Those who paid too much tax to qualify for a 'rebate' may be tempted to say, 'You're welcome!'. I'll just say, "Enjoy!'

If I got a stimulus check, I'd use it to buy something made in America.

    LOL!

That is what I'm thinking, too. It sure would be nice for my dear old Uncle Sam to "let" me have some of my money back, though!
