    "I told ya so"!
That's what you would be hearing my wife say when she hears me crying in pain after I told her I would only be in the shop for a little while.

It would be appreciated if you would select full size images instead of thumbnails when you post pictures. TIA

Yesterday was make a big mess getting the O/T ramp bed trucks back end off the ground so I can tackle the rear brakes and inspect rear end. The seals in the rams on my lift are completely gone, took a gallon of fluid to get it picked up enough to get it on jack stands and all of that run out on my new concrete.
So today I'll tear into this. Did I say I hate working on these 1 ton rear drum brakes.

Pretty cool Sandcrab, but my T5 bolted right up to my 215 bellhousing. Is the adapter just to space the input shaft back to fit right? If so, make a couple and I'll buy one from you.
I haven't bolted my bellhousing up to the engine yet, it's still in the car with the TH350 on it.

Check the input shaft stickout. Mine is 7 1/8" and the 215 crank is not deep enough to accept the pilot shaft.
Let's see how the machining and fitup goes. I cast two so I could experiment.

Doing a total rebuild of the 51 Chevy in my avatar. That photo is from the early 80s, built in the late 70s. Originally built with a 65, 396 I’m redoing it with a 59, 348 in an attempt to mimic an early build. Lots and lots of fabrication going on as often as I can

My brother likes the Batman emblem, he wore a sweatshirt with it (that our mom made ) for decades

Driving it is OK, but doesn't thrill me...I'll likely let it go pretty soon.

I have put a couple 283s in it over the years, then the crate 350 about ten years ago. David added the AC and disc brakes. And the alternator, when the generator died on a road trip!

  18. Looks like a pretty solid wagon Jim! Will be paying attention if you decide to sell it since I know someone that might be interested.

I'm about to start tearing into the 51 in my avatar as well. I'd love to know what all they did to make the Big Block fit as mine is going to have a one in it. All said and done, I'll have 505 cu in squeezed under my hood. In a pump gas friendly build. Why the choice of 348? Wouldn't a 409 also fit and be just about as period correct or are you going for mid 50s time frame?

Yes I’m going for a late 50s build theme and the 409 didn’t come out until 61 plus I had access to the 348 at the time I started looking. The 348 is actually wider than the BB Chevy creating even more fitment issues. The BB was much easier to fit into the very tight engine compartment. I used a front saddle engine mount but I would use the side mounts if I were to do it again. barrel shaped exhaust manifolds that dumped out the back. Had the cut the firewall mounts to clear all worked out pretty good.

Getting ready to mount my hood on the PU tomorrow evening. Easier to add the trim and latches like this.

  26. @squirrel - Dream find right there! '58 anything in that condition doesn't seem to exist here in the northeast. I always thought the '58 Chevy was ''going one more'' than the '57 with the quad headlights, 4th fender louver, W engine. Glad for you.

I would guess the 58 wagon didn't handle very well, I don't know as I haven't driven one. The car that I worked on didn't handle very good in my box.
I sure do love the look of a 58 Impala hard top.

The wagon handles like a full size car from the late 50s...not very well! and it has manual steering, so it's a little hard to drive. It does have power discs, so it stops ok, and the 350 gets up and goes ok, too. 3.36 gears with a TH350 means you can hear the engine singing on the highway at 70 mph. It doesn't mind, though. I do have to fix the driveshaft center support, David said the frame is cracked around the mounting holes. It has a little driveshaft rumble.
