Finally getting around to finishing up the brake job I started a few weeks ago. Traveling for work and starting a new job have kept me busy enough I haven’t had much spare time. And, I had to order lots of new parts so that also slowed me down. Oh, and I am also building a couple awards to give away at the SWMO Hot Rod Hundred that will be the first long trip for the car I am working on that it has been on in years.

After making sure our grandson wanted to return to Bonneville and securing 2 rooms for SpeedWeek on Monday it was time to install the GMC back in our XO Gas Roadster. A new solid clutch disc was found and installed along with general Bonneville clean up.
New for 2024 is the Long V-Gate style shifter for the old Tex-101 now serviced by G-Force Transmissions.
Belts and helmet have 2 years left and the fire bottles were serviced last year so we have 1 year left.
Now if I can just figure how this puzzle goes together.

Built my olds 303 20 years ago and never fired it so I decided to make some changes and tare it down to check some things out. Had Tony make me a roller cam and bought a duel roller chain and some better head gaskets from him.

I have spent a couple weeks searching for the dust cover for the 215 Buick with no luck, so today I metalworked an SBC cover.

I’ve got one with em. And one that didn’t have any when I removed the cluster. Took the cluster back out after I looked at the book.

  17. I got 2 out of the 3 brake parts ordered delivered today, just waiting on the new manual master cylinder, but got the Hurst line lock and the Wilwood proportioning valve in.
Pulled the master cylinder off I just made everything for, but after putting it all together I realize it will not work, the mounting holes might be off an 1/8 on this new one coming in.

Since it reached 50 degrees I decided to tackle the daily's lift gate switch and rear glass button out in the driveway, these new car engineers need to turn wrenches on this crap they design, holy hell.

Working on the rear brakes on the 1 ton ramp bed, ugh.

  19. Got all the pieces and roughed in the mounting holes for the new master cylinder that came in right before I left for the cardiologist, I need something easier than a rat tail file to slot half inch thick brackets.
Tomorrow I'll dress up the oblong holes in the bracket and map out the placement for the line lock and adjustable proportioning valve.
I need to swing over to napa and pick up brake line and a battery since now I'll have the J and the truck both out this summer, no more sharing one.

Finally finished my brake job and was starting to think I was making progress so went for a drive around town including a few 7,000 rpm blasts through the gears. Anyway, got back to the shop to find oil dripping from several areas and I have yet to find the big leak. Gotta love this stuff… :(

IMG_0957.jpeg Just warm enough to spray paint yesterday. So stopped at the Hardware and got some paint. They had a Rustoleum 2000 degree paint. Never used this before, but it only came in flat black and white.
So sandblasted, and threw a couple coats of paint on yesterday. They turned out OK. Beats them looking out of place on a clean rebuilt engine.

Spent most of the day drying and moving tools, manuals, and parts. The shop addition butts up against the old shop. Contracted had to cut the roof back to put the wall up and cut it back past flush. It rained last night and the water ran down and into the shop all over everything. The addition was supposed to be done prior to the roof coming off the old part.

I removed the heads from one of the 215 Buicks I picked up recently and ended up pulling the threads from a couple of the head bolt holes. I needed to Helicoil them so I made a drill and tap guide to ensure a square and properly spaced hole. I made one row for the drill, and the other for the tap with the shorter spaced holes for across the deck.

Finished converting the '50 Chevy truck from vacuum to hydroboost brakes. Should have done this from the start. The '85 truck boost unit works great with my 70's era disk/drum setup, using the same Firebird master and valve.
