In 1972, I learned to drive "on the road" in my 53 Pontiac, with 3 on the tree.
But, I had 2 years of practice prior to that with field cars at a friends house. They had acres! Learned to drive stick, and we set up barrels and railroad ties to learn how to parallell park.
First time I went out on the road with my dad next to me in the Pontiac, he had no clue I had experience with a clutch other than grampa's tractor.
I was a natural, he thought............

He later found out about the field cars, thought it was pretty clever.

64 Falcon 4 door 6 .... I was 13 or 14 in 77/78 and had full run of the farm and the surrounding public roads.

That sucker would accelerate to near about 80 MPH in just under a mile...

Traded that car and $900 for the 39 coupe I still own, unfortunately, I have covered more road miles in the Falcon... :D that is almost funny....

I taught my 12 year old nephew to "drive" (around my work lot) in a 50 Plymouth Coupe, hope it sticks with the kid.

My folks' Holden Kingswood, in a grass paddock near Cromwell. They bought the car new. Now I have it. The clutch packed a sad in the weekend, so one more thing to fix.

my first lesson was with an all wheel drive truck in a field. It usually went wherever it wanted to go and I got to hang on for the ride. My instructor encouraged me to hop in and get comfortable whenever I wanted so I did as often as I could. Sometimes it came with the trailer too. It was a little harder to manouver and very noisy

A '57 Ford 1/2 ton and a '62 Chevy II driven on some illegal
unlicensed back-road excursions. The first car of my own
that I owned (that actually ran, that is!) and drove legally,
was a '69 Buick Wildcat, followed shortly by 283/4 speed '64
    Chevelle Malibu SS and a 427 Chev-powered '67 Firebird.
Long before the cars though, there was a long string of both
legally and illegally-driven motorcycles starting at about age
    13. :)

Learned the basics of driving at 12 in a stock '51 Chevy Fleetline 2-door stick. My dad took me to the local cemetery, swapped seats with me and said: "At least you can't hurt anyone up here..."

I'd love to still have that car, but he traded it in on a new '66 Nova SS 327 4-speed. That car taught me how to DRIVE... and it's a wonder that I survived those years!

Fourteen, started out with a 40 Ford pickup. My brother and I were soon racing the 51 GMC against the 40 in the hayfields. While in High School I would drive anything that would run, my brother on the other hand had his image to worry about. When he screwed up my Dad would punish him by making him drive the family station wagon, or Heaven forbid the 64 Studebaker Commander. This was in the 80's. My brother would rather ride the bus. He missed out. The Stude had a V8 with a three on the tree. The wagon had a 428, both would do decent burnouts.

Back in 1956, I had to pass the Ohio state drivers' test in the same vehicle my daddy had taught me in -- a full-blown 1955 Buick Roadmaster. Some two tons of Detroit metal that encumbered every movement I meant to direct to the pavement. My first attempt included an eye test:

“Read the first line on the chart”:

    What chart?”
    “The chart on the wall.”

    “What wall?”

My second test, a month later and with new store-bought glasses, took me up to the parallel-parking test.

AND I ACED IT IN A 1955 ROADMASTER!
I brought that fat behemoth into 6 inches from the curb in one swoop from the starting point after forty-some practice sessions with my dad, and a new set of specs (which didn’t help with the test, just with identifying objects later in life)..

My Dad taught me to drive in our '62 Plymouth station wagon, 318 wide block, push button auto. Later I graduated to a '58 Chevy with a 283. I learned how to slam a stick shift (three on the tree! lol) in a Holden pickup during a summer job at Atkins Kroll on Guam in 1971. One of the mechanics also taught me how to side step the clutch and slam a 4 speed in a brand new Chevy Vega. I know, not much power there but it was good practice. Don't know if whoever bought that Vega ever had clutch problems! :D
