and how would the winner be decided? fastest time?, or least amount of money spent?

 

Like any race, first to arrive at the finish line. If your car breaks down, you have to fix it or get it fixed... with the cash you have. If you run out of money and run out of gas by the side of the road, tough luck. If you break down and can't get going, tough luck.

In case nobody gets to the finish line the winner will be the one who comes closest. There would have to be some kind of time limit but very generous, like 2 weeks to get across the country.

You can see where there could be a lot of strategy involved. Buy an expensive car and bet nothing goes wrong? Buy a cheaper car and count on repairs? Buy a gas sipping import and hope it lasts the trip? Buy a tough old American car and hope you don't run out of gas money? There might be an age limit on the car like, at least 25 years old?

Take the interstates? Take the blue hiways? Drive fast and get there first (if you don't blow up) or take it easy and be sure to finish?
