My coupe has 5 on 4 3/4. They can be found on Early Ford or Mopar. I found 15x5" steelies for my fronts on a Dodge Power Wagon. I think 5 on 4 1/2" are early Ford truck rims. What I did was take a piece of card board and make a template of the studs. I carried that to the junk yard and matched it up. Bring that and a tape measure..

5 on 4.5" is the 'common' Ford-Mopar-AMC pattern of the 60s and 70s. You'll find steel 15" wheels in that pattern on various examples of the following, to name a few...

Crown Victoria/LTD/Grand Marquis, 1979-89
Chrysler LeBaron/Dodge Diplomat/etc RWD 1978-83
Plymouth Fury "Rosco-type" cars 1975-77
Thunderbird/Cougar 1977-79
Some Ranger pickups

Steel 15" wheels with 5 on 4.5" pattern found their way onto many other p***enger vehicles originally equipped with 14" wheels, too. Many Torinos and such pick up 15" wheels in the course of their travels.

BIG Ford, Lincln and Mercury vehicles of the 70s will have a larger bolt pattern, though. They'll have 15" wheels, but WON'T use the 'common' lug pattern. (The HUGE 1972-78 LTDs and Grand Marquis, for example).

Hope it helps!

Mopars mostly switched from 16" to 15" around '48. Both diameters came in 5 on 4.5.

Ford wheels (big cars) used the 4.5 bolt pattern from 49 on. They went to 14 inchers sometime in the 50s (57?), and back to 15s in 1965. Of course, some cars had 15 inch wheels during the years when most had 14s, but these are the general rules.

As stated before,5 lug on 4 1/2" bolt circle is a common Ford and Mopar wheel, used for many years.I think the original shoe box wheel was pretty narrow, like 4 1/2" wide.If your looking for an older wheel,I have several, but shipping can bite you on wheels, you can almost figure 10 to 20 dollars for each wheel just for shipping. As far as measuring bolt circles,I had an old timer give me this info and I have had good luck with it.First determine if you have an even number of lugs, such as 6 or uneven number, such as 5.Even numbers measure across widest point of two lugs, outside of one lug to the inside of the other lug. What ever this measures is your bolt circle.Uneven numbers such as 5,start from outside of first lug, skip a lug,and measure to the inside of the third lug, then add 1/4" to that measurement and thats your bolt circle. In other words a 4 1/2" bolt circle wheel, will measure 4 1/4" inches. One thing to watch for is the center hole size, there are several and you may find a wheel, that is the right bolt pattern, but the center could be too small or too large, you will need to measure your center hub size, before you go on a search.Hope this doesnt add to your confusion.

i believe that the merc wheels are a little smaller hub center. they will bolt up, but can be a real ***** to get off. just a warning. ford and mopar cars used 5 on 4.5.

I had a problem finding some wheels for my shoebox too. After a few wrecking yard hunts turned up nothing, I asked the guy "what's up with all wheels (that size)?" he said the trailer manufactures come and clean him out as soon as he gets them.
So I went to the phone book, called up some local trailer building place and bought some from them. They were new primed and ready to go $25 each

"Modern" (70s and newer for sure) Ford 1/2 ton trucks use their own larger bolt pattern, not the 'standard' 5 on 4.5" p***enger car pattern...just something to be mindfull of!

Rangers and Aerostars, along with Exploders use the 5 on 4.5" pattern, though.

This would be a good nomination for tech board. This may be common knowledge but for a dumbfock like me it's good stuff to keep hold of.

What would be a good way to attach small hubcaps to newer wheels? Or am I stuck having to find older rims? later plmczy

I've never seen a Ford with 4 3/4" bolt cirvle. They were 5 1/2" till the late forties then went to 4/12" except trucks which stayed at 5 1/2". Depends what kind of hubcap you want to run too. For pre 49s that have been changed over to late Ford axle and front brakes and if you're really lucky, you can get 15"x 4 1/2" through 5 1/2" 1953 - '54 International 1/2 Ton pickup rims - they have the 4 1/2" bolt pattern, will clear most disc brakes and they take the 47 Ford style hubcaps. They were offered in two styles - one with the "windows" between the rim and the center and one where the center was solid all the way around the rim, similar to the "solids" that are available aftermarket.

5 x 4½" (114.3mm) bolt pattern spotters guide
Another option is to check out the spare tires. Most of the new stuff are styled steel wheels or have holes stamped in them. The spacesaver spares are usually just a plain wheel and aren't usually found with curb rash or loads of rust.

They are also usually thinner than your average steel wheel.

Beware that some space savers where 16" although the car wore 15"s or 14"s. converts to 114.3 mm BTW.

A few models off the top of my head:

1982-2004 Ford Rangers/ 93-2004 Mazda B series trucks
All Bronco2
All Explorers/ Mercury Mountaineers/Mazda Navajo
All Aerostars
All Jeep YJ/TJ/KJ/ZJ
Mustangs from 1994-2004
ALL SVO Mustangs (84-86)
ALL Jeep Cherokee (non Wagoneer based)
all Mavrick/Comet
All Ford Fairlane
1980+ LTD/Crown Vic/Mercury Marquis
All Torino/Montego/ Elite
All Dodge/Plymouth E bodies (Challenger/'Cuda etc...)
All Dodge/Plymouth B bodies (Roadrunner/GTX, Satelite...)

Conversely speaking, F series Ford trucks came with the larger 5 x 5½" bolt pattern

Most of the earlier wheels do not clear the calipers if you are running disk brakes, you can also look at the '70's Rancheros also...btw if you are looking for big brakes for a 9 inch, Rancheros and LTDII wagons are a good place to look ...and cheap

25. the old PLYMOUTH and DODGE cars [and Jeep two wheel drives] [as in the station wagons] had cool looking steelies that really cant be told from the Ford steelies.
they have the small 5 lug-4 and 1/2" pattern and are usually 4- to 4 and 1/2" wide wheel. the main difference is the caps are a half inch bigger so the clips need tweaked-

&with a little funny work the 40-48Ford CAPS will work on them...
a good thing to remember [is as in the later shoebox wheels] for a 49-51 ford ,they also came in 15" and also 16" sizes......

I've been called stupid before....with that said we think that the subframe on my 57 chevy pickup is an early 70's Pontiac with a 5x4 1/2" bolt pattern? Just a thought.

Hope this helps...:) Something to watch out for is the hole in the center of the wheel, the Mopars have a bigger center that will clear Aspen/Volare front(wheel bearing) rotors that lots of folks use to get a Ford 4 1/2 inch bolt patten.
