A 1957 Chevy Bel Air convertable. Near new condition, low miles, sea foam green. It was my daily driver for 2 years.

Oh, wait................that was in 1959, sorry I'm having another senior moment

  4. I came within $660. of buying my first brand new car for $1500.
    I paid $2160. for a Chevy 210 Hardtop in 56.
In 50 years of buying I have probably bought a hundred cars under $1500.
I had 5 Corvettes in the early sixties, all under $1500.
Probably 20 1940 Fords, including 4 Sedan deliveries.
    Bought a 53 Buick Skylark for $600.
1940 Merc convert for 150. in the seventies
Bought a 1934 Ford at a yard sale for 75 bucks and all the parts in the ladies shed after she kicked out the old man.
    And the beat ges on.

again i know this isnt anything old or cool, but i bought my first duster 5 years ago for $400 bucks. ran good. but the 2ft rusthole under the vinyl top forced me to get rid of it.

  8. In the early 90's :
I got a 55 Chevy for free.. paid 40 bucks to tow it home. Sold the rear rearend for 20.
    Bought a 56 2dr 150 wagon for 125 dollars- sold it for 1,600.00
    56 2dr 210 sedan for 300.. complete w/ the original 2dr interior
Paid 250 for a 55 210 sedan.. because 68 dollars for a window regulator was too much. So I bought a whole car
Two 56 Bel Air 4dr Wagons for 400 bucks.. couple dollars more for 4 bel air fenders w/ moldings from thhe same guy.

My Dad bought a 56 Bel Air 2dr Hardtop outta Palm Springs, parked sideways in the garage.. for Three hundred dollars! NO RUST ..in 1997 no doubt. My Dad put it all together, an of course the guy shows up later. I wanna buy it back.. Huh, NO.. not for sale, buddy!

I got to thinking. Starting off , how many cars did I buy BEFORE I reached $1500 total? '36 5 window (traded for Lionel trainset), '32 3 window $165, '34 service body PU $50, '32 Plymouth PB 3 window (for tow bill $10) '32 Ford tudoor w Olds $250. '40 Ply bus cpe $75. After that I guess I was getting filty rich because I don't remember what the costs were. I would say these cars following would also be under the $1500 total . '34 dodge coupe, '37 Pont coupe. '37 panel, '46 chev sedan delivery, '50 4dr, 41 PU, '51 BSA twin. All were complete runner drivers with the exception of the '34 PU and the '32 tudoor w Olds . This was between 1955 and 1962. The model A pickup was bought by my buddy after we flipped a coin in 1961 after we spotted it in a shed. WE bought a used battery for it and drove it 150 miles home. Not a bad truck for a $100 bucks.

The Falcon? Not yet but I haven't put any time into it yet. The brakes are shot and the motor cranks just didn't fire, maybe I'll get around to working on it next weekend.

And Nellie last year for $1500:

In fact, I've bought most of my cars for much, much less than $1500, but that was in the 1980's, when you could pick up a '70 Roadrunner for $400.

Cheapest car I bought was a really, really straight 225/3spd '67 Belvedere 4 door for $25. Had a blown clutch. Cheapest driver was a heinous looking '68 Fury for $100; ran it for a year or 2... super ugly, smashed all over, but a very good car.

    Damn, I feel old now.

I drove from Michigan to Virginia Beach to buy an 89 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 for 400 bucks. Got it home and found it was in even better condition than I had thought. All I did to it was stiffen up the suspension and the hood, spoiler, paint and wheels. (along with a bunch of nickle and dime stuff you can't see... You all know how that goes)

    Bought for 400 bucks:

And this is the new owner driving it away in December. Sold for $4500

  18. I bought my 1932 Ford coupe for under 1500.I gave the guy $800 and a 1928 Chevy junker that had all the wood rotted in it.Value of the Chevy was about 2-3 hundred at the time...biggest regret I have is selling it.But I tracked down the car to the latest owner...Take care of it HRP!!

  19. I guess I'm missing the point of this thread. I read it that the guy has $1500 to spend and wondered what people were able to grab for that kind of money NOW, not what someone paid 20-30 years ago. I guess I'm reading it all wrong. If thats the point of the thread then I'll post what my Dad paid for stuff during the depression. Just as revelent.

  21. You are absolutely right.I am one of those who need to read properly..my bad...
In today's money, you can't buy anything much for 15 hundred IMO:(
I recently bought a 72 F100 for 1400 that is solid and runs good, but that is not HAMB friendly.
