I feel that the quality and depth of a paint job regardless of the color, is much more reliant upon the quality and effort of the bodywork, and the person performing that work, rather than any number or name on a paint can. Especially black..

I didn't paint my car BTW, I just picked the color ;-)

  3. The absolute best color of black is Midnight in the Cypress Swamp Black.

Actually one of the companies has one they call Obsidian Black that is a real nice looking color or the lack there of.

Personally I like a pure black no flip flop not pearl not charcoalish just plain old black.

I could not agree more with what nick 28 says!

  5. Wouldn't that actually be brown, textured with corn?

    Hey waddayacare,
    Maybe you remember this:

Way back when the Sleezy Riders had a questions section. This chick writes in and says that she is a new mama and that her old man wants her to give him a rim job and should she go out and polish his wheels.

    and the answer is:

    No polish his ________!!!

Yes, black is black but not all "black" car colors are true black. Some are brownish black and some bluish. I agree with those who like the Harley black. Funny thing was when I went in to have the guy mix some for a project, he laughed and handed me a can of Ppg 9300. Said that's the stuff.

Some also believe single stage is better than two stage. I actually like two stage (like the factory jobs) Maybe it is just me but top coat clear seems to have a harder surface than single stage black. I seems to polish better and less prone to scratching.

Also I saw a crazy bitchin' black on a show car once. I asked the guy what was different. He said it was a "candy black" with black basecoat and black tinted clear on top. Might have been pulling my leg.

  8. Bwwaaaa ha ha ha haaaaa!!!!!

You sir are a freakin' trip!!!!!!!

Damn! I think I just pissed my pants!

  9. The blackest black is Hackney Carriage (taxi) black... Father Ted says the blackest black of all is the black they use for priests' socks - when you've seen that you realise that everything else is just really, really, really dark blue.

  10. Funny the things that just stick in your mind. ;)

Wow herby, das a beeeg one. I love the way you textured it with da corn maaaan.

  11. I say it's..........Ottawa,Kansas's- RogerWard[Bad Paint Company] Black......
This is a secret recipe by him and is very much a better looking color of black.......
I call it "9 ft deep black"........
You can walk in it- turn around and see your self coming AND going!

Anyone who saw this Chevy wagon in person could vouch for that,It still looks great after almost 20 years ,since painted by Roger

Anyway... BCR painted this... to this Black Beauty!

Problem is "Black cars are hard to Photograph because of the reflectivity" and tends to hide the details as well as the car in certain conditions such as under a shade tree as shown in the photo.

His prep work made that color perfect and deep.

    It's so reflective... it's like photographing chrome!

Can't argue about the rich luster it gives the car especially for the Dash!

I think part of the trick is to use black primer. I used 5 Star Hotrod primer first then shot BASF Limco Black on top of that. Looks very black in the sun. Right amount of hardener and shines nice.

  16. Dupont Black diamond #99S but it's laquer, but that makes it better

The black paints from long ago were blacker because they used coal dust as the pigment, which of course is not good for the environment. Now most of what is sold as black is actually very dark brown, blue or maroon, which is why most see the tint they have.Has anybody ever tried adding raw pigment back into black paint??

This is true. The funny thing is that like most things "true black" is in the eye of the beholder. What people perceive to be the blackest black varies. I talked to a custom car painter once who told me that when guys came to him insisting on the blackest black, he actually mixed a small amount of blue in it. They loved it. Go figure

I'm using 9700 with 2001 clear. No code just base color.

So what's the diff between 9300 and 9700?

Just get the straight black toner. Also, if you spray about 3 coats of clear, and mix a tiny amount of red pearl into the second coat the results are amazing in direct sun and un detectable in regular light. Just sayin.

There is a black with a brown base color, done use it!

  22. Glassurit 22-Line Single Stage Black. It's about as deep as black as you can get, and it'll look like the car was molded in that color. Expensive, though.

The original Centauri (99, if I remember) was outstanding, too.

For solid colors, the only way to go is single stage. To me, clear makes a solid color look like it's got a plastic coating.

My girl bought a 2ss Camaro, Black, if I was painting a car Black and wanted it to shine. I would use The black they painted her 2 ss....

I also like caterpiller black, but its flat, and has a sheen, very washable and waxable so I am told. just semi flat

  25. I think the nicest black I ever shot color wise to my eye aside from the ol nitrocellulose lacquer was Dupont Emron black, it was a total lack of color didn't have a blue or red sheen to it it was just pure black. I don't think you can by emron any more.

I think the actual color code for the Dupont "shade of black" we are all talking about is 99.

The suffix is kind of paint. L was Lucite-acrylic laquer, A is Centari-acrylic enamel, U (I think) is Imron-polyurethane enamel (nasty stuff to breath).

I'm sure there are a lot of newer paints with different suffixes.

  27. Imron, damn I spelled it wrong. They used to say that it would coat your lungs and that was it for you. I liked it as well as I like lacquer, it seemed pretty easy to shoot and it just looked tits when you were done.

    Benno,
My painter used lots of Imron on scooter frames, went on smooth, dried to a wet looking gloss and is tough as nails. But when they came out with hardner for the Centari, he used it almost exclusively, dried fast enough to wet sand in a reasonable time and was almost as hard as Imron.

I sure miss the guy who did my paint work, he was one of my best friends. Died pretty young, like lots of painters seem to do.

    I agree 100%

My favorite is ppg Concept Black. It is a single stage black, stuff lays out amazing and is tough as hell! Another good thing about it is touch up is a breeze, just spot in, wet sand it all smooth and buff out and you will never know there was a problem.

Here is a pic of on my bike I just painted:

  30. Best paint I ever shot on my bike.

I think with painters it is either lung/respiratory disease or alcohol that takes them out. The go to cure for painters colic is alcohol.
