Class of '72. I bought an all steel '41 Willys coupe ex-drag car for $100 my junior year. I helped pit for the guy that ran the Arby's A/F dragster and bought most of his 392 hemi stuff when he switched to 426 hemis. Always short on funds for the Willys, I drove a '68 Torino Gt fastback that I eventually got to run high 13s. Shortly out of high school I got married and the Willys project never got completed. I parted it out in 1976. Wish I still had it. I have been fortunate to have owned some 63 or so muscle cars, hot rods and trucks since the Willys and I'm building a 31 A coupe and a 39 Olds coupe gasser right now.

1970 I owned a 1966 GTO 4 speed 389 V8 . I paid 750.00 which was a gret deal at the time. It took every dime I had, White with a black vynl top ,black interior. American spokes all around. I street raced, took it hunting, dated, graduated from high school, drove the living hell out of it. Was the Muscle car era. Then got drafted. Was in the Army, my dad traded in on a 71 Buick Skylark. What a great time in life..... Hope to replace it one day..

  7. Not me but my brother Doug in his senior year. I think it was around 1966.
His grades were good ( mine sucked so my dad relieved me of my 57 Bel Air convertible).
Anyhow..... dad gave him a Studebaker Golden Hawk coupe that some local traded into dads used car lot for a used Corvette.
It was mildly hopped up under the hood, had dual glass packs and an awesome purple lacquer paint job.
Doug had some pin striper gold leaf the quaters "Purple People Eater".
He was suddenly BMOC with that ride. Chicks swooned over it and guys thought it was the berries.
Doug had an excellent senior year with that to ride around in.

This is a sweet thread, it brings back some great memories. I can't believe I did not see it sooner! My senior year, 1988, was a great finish to an otherwise crappy school experience. My brother was gone to the Army and ordered to go to Korea. He drove his 1955 chev back home to Washington from Kansas, then he was on to Korea. He told me to drive the car and take good care of it!!! My shop teacher told me "you are in your element", "this car is what you belong in"... I look back and smile, it was a super cool moment in time.:)

@ swell: I have an old neihbor selling his xR7 clone project if u really miss it. Lol

  14. This was my 'senior project'. A 64 Chevy Bel Air 4 door with a 283 and powerglide. My Dad, friends, and neighbors all helped me freshen the motor, rebuild the front suspension, replace the entire brake system, and touch up the finish. I learned so much on that old Chevy.

She was a great car and a few months after it sold when I went off to college...I saw it back on a used car lot for $1000 less than I got for it. It was trashed beyond belief. Heartbreaking.

I had two during my senior year. The first was a refugee from the junk yard. Summer of '69 between junior and senior years. 1955 Chevy 2dr hardtop. It was used as a play car jungle cruiser. Running it and abusing it on a farm in the fields etc. My Dad heard about it and bought it for me for $75 bucks. Bad part, almost total rust thru everywhere. Good part. Someone had dropped a 348 350 HP, 3 duece, solid lifter, engine in it. My first car so I had to learn setting lifters and everything. It ran like crap when I got it because they never took care of it. Just a junk play car that they would even run the old drain oil from their good cars in it. 3 speed stick on the floor and 4:11 non posi. Once I learned to tune it, including going thru the carbs (had an old expert working at the garage across the street from my house) it really ran strong. Started dating my wife Sept '69 and her brother had a car that I bought around Christmas '69, middle of my senior year. 1964 Pontiac Catalina, 2 dr sedan, ex-police captains car for the city of Brookfield, WI. 389 2 barrel, three on the tree, gray taxi cab interior, but it still had the drivers side windsheild post mounted spot light, (lots of fun with that). The 389 was shot so I got a '65 four barrel 389 GTO motor and Muncie 4 speed trans and put it in during Christmas break. Local racers donated a 3:89 posi center for the rear. Turned into a really nice fast car. Mark L

Class of '83, ran a 69 Firechicken. Medium blue metallic, kinda faded, black vinyl roof with some cracking. PMD wheels w/o trim rings, rears cut n widened to run 10 inch cheaters. 12 bolt posi with 4.11, built Turbo 400, 400 .30 over, 12.5/1 forged slugs on crower rods, wild cam, 455 SD stage 4 heads decked .30 for about 13/1 final compression. Edelbrock torker and an 850 dbl pumper mechanical secondaries, GM HEI ign. Had to drive from Milton to Streetsville almost everyday to fuel, with VP 104. Would lift drivers side front wheel a foot and passenger side would juuuuust touch the road on launch.

Used to run the big dollar guys from Toronto out on James Snow Parkway before it was finished. Fresh asphalt, straight as a die but good brakes were key cuz you'd run out of road out the back end of a pass. (overpass not installed yet lol)

Saw more kitty than the SPCA :)

    Cheers
    James
