Hung out at the Co-op filling station. Which closed at 5 during the week and at noon on Saturday. There was 2 places that we could buy beer in Newkirk. The Ice Dock and a convenience store at the south end of town. Everyone would meet up at the Co-op station shoot the bull and hang out . One night a young girl who just got her drivers license pulled in there too fast and knocked over one of the fuel pumps with her Folks 74 Buick station wagon. The car wasn’t damaged. She backed up and drove home . When the police arrived at their house she said she had been home all night lol . Sadly that ended our place of gathering.

This one of those kool story-tell posts I musta missed. What did we do? We street raced. In the early years it was the ol race from a roll for a few gears. As time went on it was "go here" type stuff just for fun with no money involved. Then it went to hang here, race there, come back. I can't say the cars by year n make, but safe to say the action, ball busting, comraderie and hijinks were the same. Just way faster, more money involved, and in my case friendships that have spanned decades and continue today. Many left the streets for safety and security choosing the strip for good. I did too, but the feel of 3am, the smell of burnt rubber mixed with Turbo Blue, and the scatter when the spotlights flashed are like memory tattoos.
Ok, hijinks. I had one of those Junior Achievement product spotlights made from a plunger and plugged into a cig lighter. I pre-arranged a gig where I'd pull up, flash the spotlight, and watch the crowd scatter and leave, IN A HURRY! So many tagged along it was getting hard to get off a race or 2. The real players stayed or faked it, the majority left when I flashed over the whole crowd. That was a good night. Another night one of the usual suspects did a commando crawl behind and under the opponent's car and splashed water under his tires, using the smoke from his burnout for cover. Hilarious, for a moment he was John Bluto Belushi from Animal House. Imagine our mutual surprise when the guy's car still carried the fronts and left as if it never happened. Shocked would be putting it mildly. He still lost to our guy by a car but damn that was funny. There's some stuff that even goes against the decorum here, but safe to say I'll never forget, nor would want to.

I lived in Duncan Okla, we would drive main street from Cottons drive in to the Court house that you could circle, then we would go out to beach street and drag race .
