Spent three hours on a pair of SU carburetors that had been " professionally rebuilt " before they were ready to install.

IMG_4098.JPG IMG_4099.JPG Gathering stuff for the Charlotte Auto Fair next week I dig out a pair of Model T wire wheels with hubs and cut off axle ends still attached. Decide I'll just take the wheels so I take the lug nuts off and start to pull the bearings off the spindles when I find a really neat example of shade tree mechanics. One of the bearing dust caps is tack welded to the wheel. I guess it kept falling off so heck, just weld it. Ground off the welds and got the cap off but have I ruined the patina?

    Hello,
On the way home from our son's place, today, we saw black smoke ahead of us. In Mission Viejo, off to the side of the road, was a fire truck and EMT vehicle. But, on the other side of those vehicles, was a very cool looking 55 Chevy sedan, green and white, lowered to the ground, that was on fire. All of the stuff from inside was on the sidewalk and the definite black smoke from rubber/wires/oil was rising in the air.

The whole Chevy was very low to the ground, the trunk was up and the smoke/flames were coming up from that area of the car. The hood was down, so nothing was wrong up there. It looked as if the gas tank exploded and caught the whole rear section, from the rear doors, back to the trunk, on fire.

It was a sad sight to see such a cool car on fire. We hope the people were OK and were able to get outside. Because it was on the curb, traffic was allowed to move by the ghastly scene. No one could stop as assistance was already happening.

    Jnaki
Speculation here: Having seen several lowered cars on fire in the trunk area over the years, it certainly looked like the warning from the CHP was in play. But, it could be the old story of a lowered car being too low when a flat or something scrapped the ground, sending sparks and the resulting fire. The law says no lower than the rim and there is a reason for that law. Stuff happens to everyone...

Made some headway on a long stalled O/T dash project. Man do I need to get this done.

  9. It's called "Labor Day", right ?
So, I'm laboring/working on upholstering some slightly O/T vintage "Italian" sports car interior panels, fabricated a set of "period correct" A/C hoses for another and finishing details on a rebuilt '58 Imperial steering gear.
Hoping to ship the hoses (to Australia) and the steering gear (to elsewhere in California) tomorrow and continue working on interior upholstery. Also, expecting a delivery of another '58 Imperial Convertible to the shop tomorrow.

Worked on mounting the digital read out on the old bridgeport mill at the shop.

  11. I cleaned and vacuumed in my old shop today. Still looks like hell because I have too much good stuff and I am short of room until I get my new shop done.
I also did the A/C system on one of my O/T vehicles, and found that the compressor is hooped. Bummer.

I found out today that ventilation is extremely important on a banger engine. I lost my oil fill cap a couple weeks ago. So I made on. 20180821_110210.jpg so today I'm going to a car show. Drive it about 2 blocks and oil is just a steady stream running out the rear seal area. So I drive it back over two quarts of oil lost in that little bit. I take the new custom cap I made and threw it. Now just the regular leak as it's always had lol.

  13. Monday I was trading my real nice Henry J quarter panel for a nice pair of steel doors. Sometime in the future I'll have to replicate my paint job on the glass doors onto the steel ones so I can have a pair of non droopy doors.
Today was spent laying out a pattern on my hood sides to cut out, might take a little height out of it so the nose is more rounded. 20180904_154642.jpg received_429559584235593.jpeg received_478492125962969.jpeg 20180905_135838.jpg 20180905_175127.jpg

  15. Didn't drive the Ford much over the long weekend, basically on Saturday only. Tuesday back to work. Get home 4:30-ish and get ready for the gym and take the Ford with me. All along it sounds like something is banging around in the trunk so I figured I'd look at it later. Stopped at a local cruise first... still 93 and quite humid. I look and my right side tail pipe is hanging low. Disgusted, I left early and parked it. Dove into it yesterday after it cooled off a bit and still had light to see. The exhaust guy did a real cob-job on my system in general. The rear hanger broke at the frame by the bumper, of course the hanger is welded to the pipe... hate that lazy shit. I was able to salvage the hanger by extending it with a piece of 1" x 1/8" steel bar I had at the shop.

  16. A couple of years ago We purchased a Tax forfet 1000 sq ft house at a real low price. Picture is my wife standing in the doorway when we first bought it. Our youngest son was planning on fixing it up and living there. Unfortunately his wife got cancer. She is now stage 4. And they moved to Mammoth to be near her folks. And now our son doesn't want the house. So yesterday we listed the house For Sale on the Facebook Market Place and posted a few pictures. And there where over 1300 views 70 messages and we sold the place in less than ten hours. What rea Ash flat House 005.JPG lly makes Us happy was who bought it. A young lady 23 years old. It seems her goal was to own her own house. And she was renting a crappy camper doing without. Not married no children and saving as much as she could hoping to save a down payment on a house. We bought the house really low priced so we priced it accordingly. So for $3500 this young woman has her home bought and paid for no liens or mortgage. We are happy with the deal and She cant believe her good fortune . One of those Win Win situations. We will record her deed Wednesday.

Took the mustang headers off the F100 and replaced them with a set from a lightning and now the pipe will not hit the frame on the pass side, after I put a few miles on the replacement engine I will have new pipes made. I am using flex pipe to hook it up to the existing pipes .

I've been doing all the prep work to mold in the rear fenders on a '47 Ford coupe. I've relocated the fuel filler into the trunk by using two '47 Ford filler necks and a '40 Ford grommet. With some planning and good eyeballing I was able to get it right on the first try. I also spent some time filling trim holes and prepping the body for the procedure. I used weld through primer on the fender lip and body mount area, amd will seam seal and undercoat the inside of the fenders after I've welded them to the body fully and filled the hole for the fuel door.
I will post more pics as this progresses this week.

Yup, a friend of mine experienced the same issue. He had put a steel wool pad to help with the blowby but it plugged the tube......oil streaming out the bottom of his cotter pin hole in the flywheel case. Removed the pad and all's well.........Model A's don't like their tubes plugged.

  30. Spent the day changing a single master cylinder to a dual cylinder and of course had to make up some new lines and bleed the brakes. Some clown (Me) put a new cylinder on the car 20 years ago and just replaced what was there. My bad.
