It was a good weekend. I got to spend time working in the garage with my daughter. She just turned 2 in February but she’s 17 in her little mind. So while I’m puttering around, she’s doing the same pretending to be very serious about her job as a master mechanic and body man (er..woman). She’s pulling wrenches from my tool box and pretending to tighten a couple loose bolts on the dog. She’s checking the tire pressure on my ride with a screw driver. You know GOOD kid stuff.

At one point I decide to back my car into the driveway so that I could get around to the front and clean up some of the chrome. I remove the 2 piece headlight bezels on the Lincoln and start to clean them up. The kid apparently thinks I’m doing a full custom grill and starts measuring things for me (see pic). When she’s done measuring for my new custom grill job she picks up a rag and starts to polish my headlight pieces. It was a good time… and I was proud of my little girl.

There was a lot of build up on the chrome so I decided that a little steel wool was needed. No steel wool at home… so it was time for a trip to my little girl’s favorite store HOME DEPOT (she really gets a kick out of it???). Before leaving I thought it best to pull the car back into the garage. I kicked it over, gave gas, and creeped her back into the garage. That’s when I heard the noise. It started out as a scrape of metal on concrete and ended (2 seconds later) as a snap & crack sound. Seems as though my little Queen of Kustoms decided that my tires needed more chrome and had placed one of my headlight pieces under the rear tire.

Should I have been angry? Was it really her fault? Was a perfect piece of automotive design ruined? Maybe… but at the end of the day she’s a great kid and I’m a better dad… and that’s worth more than some of metal and chrome.

So what did you did with your kid this weekend?

My daughter went with me to "pick up car aprts" as she calls it. She is 3 yrs old and loves to help me on a parts run. Luckily the place we went to the guy had three horses, so she was in heaven petting and looking at them. I rewarded her hard work with a stop at Burger King Playland, she calls it Burgerland and loves every second of it. I figure I better take along with me now because when she gets older she'll have nothing to do with an old hot rod.....who knows maybe not, maybe she'll be building them better than me! Here's a pic of her at OKC nationals car show:

  5. I pulled the training wheels off my 5yr old's bike. He rode for two days straight & has yet to fall off.

The kid has better balance than I ever did. He's already wanting to try my old unicycle.

I took my daughter out to the Alameda Point show / swap meet on Sunday with my wife. She is 10 years old and likes the old car / music scene already. She was disappointed, however, that I didnt buy this old schwinn tandem bike that was for sale...... "But Daddy, we can ride together!!!!!!!!!!" I'm now feeling guilty.

After I got home from work Friday nite, I looked back outside and the right rear tire on the impala is flat. My 4 yr old daughter, dressed as a woodland fairy complete with wings, tiara and magic wand helped me pull the tire off.

She has known what all the components of the flatty are since she was 2. And she can't wait 'til I get the coupe done so we can take it to the hardware store.

I did something I should've made time for in the past few months, and put down the pencils, shut the door to the studio, and just ran around with my 2 year-old son in the back yard for hours.... then, after a pizza dinner, we just hung out and played with his cars. Simple, relaxing, and the best time I've had in months.

  9. My 15 yr old Daughter and I cut up several old drive shafts and made a large wind chime. She also used my drill to wind up wire and cut it into small links and made a chain braclet. Absolutely nothing better than time in the shop with my girl!

My boy helped my Friday getting the trim off, apparently his plastic hammer and plyers were needed. Saturday he helped me tape off the car, had him go inside during painting (not at ALL happy about that) but I made it up to him with a bike ride to the park. My wife is in Texas all week for work so it's just Him and I until Friday, so we'll see what we can get done this week.

My wife and my daughters were up in Burleson for her sister's baby shower, so me and my 11 year old went skating Sunday.

Saturday my 5 year old rode along with me to Houston to look at buying a 62 cadillac. He was a trooper with no AC, long wait for the owner and in the end...no car. Sunday we went and saw this behemoth...truly awesome! he also helped me put the starter back in my 62 caddy...handing me tools.

How about kids and grandkids? Spent the day at the drags with my son and grandson. This is my grandsons Jr. dragster, he just got it this spring and made about 5 passes and blew the original motor. Yesterday was the first time out with a new motor, wasn't running quit right, needs jet work, but still ran a best ET of 9.16 but he let off near the end and only had a mph of 65 on that run, top mph yesterday was 71

That's a great story Goozgaz. It couldn't have been better. I suffered the same sort of thing with my '51 Vicky. My son let the handle of the floor jack fall and land on the quarter panel. Spring on the handle was broke and I hadn't fixed it yet. Yeah, he was certainly scared 'cuz I had to go for a walk down to the end of the block and back. But then I told him it wasn't his fault, I should have fixed the spring when it broke. Now the handle has roll bar tubing on it and a new spring.
Didn't do anything but dinner out with the boys last weekend. They are 21 and 17 and it's hard to corral them to do anything. But...this coming weekend is Paso and we are headed there. THAT should be a good father-son bonding day indeed.

Took my son to the local cruise at the mall in the rain friday night.I was excited when he thought that a traditional A was cool.On Saturday we competed in a jiu jitsu tournament.A pretty good weekend together.

  22. I drove my roadster 1200 plus miles to hang out with my son for the weekend. He moved to Denver to go to work for a well known after market hotrod parts supplier, so I get to meet up with him on the road at hotrod events.

Not a bad deal, but I do miss him alot in between.

Buy a Gennie Shifter and make his dad Proud:p :D

  23. Took my two girls to a car show.

Went to the largest annual local car show with one of my 3 boys (18 - 21 - 25 yr old and all into cars).

When my oldest was about 4, he was watching me sandblast some rust on an old Willys Utility wagon I had. He asked why I was taking the paint off. I told him "to get to the metal". Later that afternoon I was sitting in the kitchen having a cup of coffee, when I see him and his little buddy "washing" the brand new Caravan, with blasting sand!! He thought if it was good for the Willys, it would be good for Mom's brand new car too. So much for my first and only brand-new car's paint job... although most of it buffed out.

Worked until 2am Saturday morning putting an engine together while listening to satellite radio 50's music, with a cold long neck for a reward after finishing. Up at 6am to take the engine, hood and fenders to Tennessee.
5 hours down, 5 hours back, long but fun day. One of many.
