  5. '79 slant six Plymouth Volare coupe in Salisbury MD 23 years ago. Nothing fancy as such but for a young foreigner it was a neat experience. I remember not knowing meaning of "yield" but guessed right since I passed. I had finnish license for years already but wanted the local also.

In 1992 I took my driver's test in my dad's 1921 Model T Ford Roadster (stock). It was quite the experience (not just for me, but for the lady who gave me the test).

1971 chocolate brown, black final top, 400 Pontiac Catalina with brown vinyl seats....in the winter they were so cold they never warmed up in the summer if you wore shorts they were so hot I swear you lost a layer of skin when you sat down.....I could not imagine sending my daughters out to drive that battleship let alone park it.....we had that car forever most people kept them along time back then.....no leasing I guess or they just avoided credit.....

1976 Chevy PU. That same nasty green color the game wardens had.
(big fun on the back roads of central Oklahoma)

When the trooper got in the pass. side there was another car parked close enough that he could not get the door all the way open and he bent his stiff brimmed straw hat.

My father's then 2 year old '67 VW cargo van (double doors on both sides of the cargo area). I was originally supposed to drive mom's '57 Chevy, which I still have. I don't remember why I couldn't use it - I think it may have been something to do a loud muffler. Anyway, the Virginia State Police drivers license examiner was impressed with a 16 year old's ability to parallel park a cargo van. Dad kept the van until sometime in the late 80's. I wish that I'd gotten it instead of telling him to go ahead and sell it.

Which time?? I took the test in 1967 as quickly after I turned 16 as I could. The first time I went in my Dad's 1959 Oldsmobile 88 - tester wouldn't let me take it because the emergency brake wouldn't work. Didn't help any to tell them I knew it didn't work and my Dad - Chevrolet dealership parts manager - had it on order. Made my Dad mad so he drove me back home to get my aunt's 1964 Chevrolet Biscayne to go back to take the test the same day. When I went out with the tester I pulled up to the first stop sign and hit the brakes -which were way more touchy than my Dad's Oldsmobile - I practically threw the tester through the windshield. When he got composed he simply said "take me back to the station." One week later - the tester was only there on certain days - I went back for the third time for the test. This time we took my grandfather's 1959 Oldsmobile 98 which drove much more like my Dad's and I finally passed my test! I've been driving every since then - so I guess if you see me in a 1964 Biscayne in front of you, stay back from me until after I have stopped at the stop sign. :)

  22. It was back in 1962 and I think the car was a 59 Opel wagon, nothing worked right on that car so it didn't pass tech on the first try. Second try some one came the wrong way down a one way street at me and I got a lecture on tolerance and a fail for what I had to say about it. By the third try I had learned to keep my yap shut and the car had been repaired so I got a pass. Either that or the tester just didn't want to go for another ride with me.

Started driving back roads at 14 in old chevy pickups. Started a paper route at 15 in a 59 Rambler American 3 on the tree that I bought for $50. Took first road test in the Rambler, failed parallel parking, even though I thought I nailed it. Two weeks later took in my cousins new 68 Toyota Corona automatic, which was a breeze. The Rambler was soon replaced with a 63 Impala SS, white with red interior.

  25. 1982 Fiat X-19. Kind of threw the examiner for a loop, but made the parallel parking portion a breeze!

  28. I took the test in my buddy's '66 Chevy 1/2ton P/U and accidentally got a "B" truck license. Came in handy later when I got a job driving a delivery truck........
