  2. The 38 Chevy Coupe in my profile pic. He passed away in 2006, and I’ve had it since. It’s due for some updates.

My dad had several cars when he was a kid. He recently told me how he had three cars all at the same time in high school...a 57 Ford convertible, a 59 Thunderbird convertible and a little flathead powered custom hot rod. While I was growing up, he mainly drove corvettes.

Dad told me ,when he was just getting out of high school in the 1930s,he got a used Wippet Roadster. He pick up in bad shape and fixed. He said he loved it,and it was kind of fast n sporty. After a few years,he had good pay job,got a new car , 1940 Chevy Coupe. So tryed to sell the old Wippet,no one would give him near what he wanted. He said he was not going let any one cheet him. He took it to the real deep rock pit out side of town, rolled it off the high point ,in too the pit. He got a wife an built a house,I came along in 42 when he was in the Navy. He still had that Chevy Coupe by the time, after WW2,did he buy another new car, ya,New Kaiser.

My favorite was a '61 2 door Impala, but the coolest was probably the '56 Sunliner he bought new. I have a picture of the Sunliner somewhere around here, although I missed out on that one, since I'm a '61 model also.

Dad's first car was a used '48 Ford painted brown. He rolled it on his first date w/ Mom. Some friends were following behind, and helped them roll it back on the tires so the date could continue.

  11. My dad had a good eye for cars. I have a HUGE box of old pictures I have to comb through. His first was a V8 '32 Ford coupe, bought around 1938 for like $25. After the war, used cars were scarce, he had a '37-ish Air Flow. I have pictures of him with a '49 Chrysler, his favorite was a '47 Mercury coupe, maroon. He had a can of touch up paint in the garage for years for that one.

On Long Island, I recall his '54 Mainline coupe, no frills. That got traded in on a '59 Ranch Wagon that was totaled out in 1963. He had a '55 Belair wagon to get his to his next car, a '59 Parkwood wagon that served him well. I should have pictures from that when we camped upstate NY in 1967-1968. Next was a '64 Country Sedan, I had hoped to get my hands on that one, but it was sold around 1972.

The car that I remember my dad telling me about was his Model T that was ''underslung'' He thought he would race it at a dirt track called New Kensington Speedway. It seems the track used off spec paint from a nearby paint factory to try and keep the dust down. They used silver paint the day my dad tried to ''race'' The paint back then was oil based so it never really dried and after 2-3 laps his car was covered with silver paint and he gave up racing.

  14. Dad’s first car was a 1950 Chevy Fleetline. Then he bought a new 1965 Honda S-90 and rode it the last year in high school and part way through college. After Mom got cold on the Honda going to college in Iowa City, he bought a 1956 Mercedes Benz 190 SL that Mom learned to drive a stick on. They transferred to college in Kirksville, Mo and nobody knew how to work on an old Benz, so Dad traded it for a 1963 Falcon vert. The Falcon was a turd, but Dad kept it running and the last week of his Senior year, he bought a 1969 Camaro RS off the showroom floor at Rapids Chevrolet in Cedar Rapids. Through the 1970’s it was all Chevrolet until Mom got a new Pinto in 1978. Then it was a mixture of Fords and Chevrolet with one or two Dodges. He did have a 1963 Split Window Coupe Corvette long enough for me to remember riding in it.

My dad was pretty much an Olds man, at least until his job required impressing people with a leased Mercedes. The best was his turbocharged 1963 Jetfire F85. Dark brown metalflake and 215 horses out of a 215 motor. The thing would scoot. He traded it in right before I got my license.

This is a terrible photo but it is the only one I've ever been able to locate. My father worked for Tucker and he actually owned one of the cars, number 24. It is the one that is presently in the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed.

Outstanding responses. This thread is a small way to remember and honor all of our dads and the impact they had on us. Keep them coming and please dig through your old pictures and post them.

My dad's first car was a Model T, which he said was well used when he got it, and constantly needed new babbit bearings. Then he got a Model A until 1939 when he had a good enough job to afford a new '39 Chev.

Dad had a 65 GTO convertible as far back as I can remember. Unfortunately Dad is gone now, but I still have his GTO & a few other hot rods he collected over the years..

41 Ford convert right after the war that he bought just before the war in 41-his mom drove it during the war years, then a new Buick convert in 50 then a Chevy of some sort then a 57 Olds Fiesta wagon with a J2 then a string of Olds after that.

  23. Dad & Uncle's first car they tried to bring home, was a 50 Chevy 2dr sedan. Although, they truly wanted a business coupe. I grew up hearing the story, many times. They later built an installed their first small block in the Sedan. Dad buys Jay Dodsons 54 Chevy 2dr HT Coupe. You didn't change the oil, you just added used oil, because it leaked out a little slower than you were pouring it in. Then they bought a 55 150 2dr sedan, with a caved in door. It was originally a Ma Bell telephone company green, cheapie. So the small block in the 50 sedan, went into the 55. There was a time when the 55 was bright yellow with gold murano pearl. Which sat during the day, parked out front, at Frank's Autobody. In this particular instance, the wind came up as my dad watched, Frank's sidewalk sign, slap up against the door and qtr.

Of the cars he had later, that stood out to me, were the..
    57 Chevy sedan delivery
    Jardine's (headers) 59 2dr Biscayne
    Then came VTNam
Came back in 67 and bought a 64 Rivi and chopped the top.
The rest were non hamb cars.

    A Rivi story..
Mom's best friend was getting married in her own home. The groom is waiting, around out front, looking at the car sitting in the driveway. It was dumped down with an air cylinder, set up. By that time, he had sprayed it candy rootbeer brown. Busy looking at the car, the groom missed his que and was late walking in to the ceremony.

When I was on FB, it was stories like this, that people shared with me, after contacting me. Thinking my acct was actually my dad's, being that I have his name and my interests are mostly pre60's cars.

This is what my Dad drove. This is my first day of preschool so had to be 1977. Seems like he always has/had something cool to drive. He has a ‘40 Ford coupe he’s owned since 1984 and a ‘34 Chevy Vicky.

He never owned 50s cars when I was around, only 50s boats. But he did have a super bee with the 440 and six pack when I was a kid. Kicked himself for selling that....

My dad wasn't much of a car guy. Mainly FOMOCO. When i was in Jr. High when had a '60 Ford 4 door with a six and automatic. Hated that car. Next was a 4 door 63 1/2 Galaxie. At least it had a small block with a Cruisomatic. We moved to SoCal in '66 and he went to GM products. But the first new car he bought after the war was a '51 Ford Woodie. He talked about that car until the day he died at 100+. I guess that's why I'm a Ford wagon guy. Had a '65 2 dr. Falcon wagon in HS and my current project is a '54 Ranch Wagon.
