my soon-to-be son in law drives a '72 nova as his daily driver. it has drums on all four corners. he told me tonight that he would like to put discs on the front, but couldn't afford the high dollar adapter kits. is there a bone yard bolt-on that he can use to put disc brakes on his nova? i thought that surely this had been discussed on here before, but couldn't find anything using search. TIA
'67 -'72 A-body (Buick Skylark, Pontiac Lemans/Tempest/GTO, Chevy Chevelle). '67 -'69 F-body (Camaro/Firebird). '68 -'74 X-car (Nova/Omega/Apollo/Ventura). '69- 72 G-body (Grand Prix, '70 -'72 Monte Carlo). The X and F cars are rear-steer, the other are front-steer. Just use your steering arms on whatever spindles you find. Keep in mind that the '67 -'68 stuff is 4-piston caliper with expensive/hard to find rotors.
Hollander says...73 74 Apollo, 67-72 Buick Special, 67-9 Camaro, 67-72 Chevelle, Montecarlo 70-2, Nova 68-74, Olds F85 67-72, Omega 73-74, GMC Sprint 71-2, Ventura 71-44. Of coure this the interchange for cars that already have discs, so if you find a donor, grab the whole****embly with a-arms, and outer tie rod ends.. then you'll have all the stuff.
The disc spindles that will bolt onto your car have a bolt-on caliper bracket, but it won't bolt onto your drum spindles. Only the second-gen F-cars and later X-cars have the integral caliper brackets with steering arms that don't unbolt. You must use the spindles from the donor car.
You can modify the drum brake spindle to use the disc brake backing plate. You have to mill .625 off the face of the top backing plate mounting boss.
Yeah you need the whole shebang. I've been getting complete camaro front clips for $50 and less. You'll still need a disc/drum master cylinder.
hey atch, here is some more info that I had bookmarked from when I was working with a '68 nova. X-body disk brake swap And if that doesn't help out, then I would start looking for info here. They are real die hard nova guys so any questions would easily be answered there.
You don't want the disc brakes off a '67 chevelle (or anything else 67 I'm guessing) because they have 2 piston calipers. It costs alot more to rebuild and the parts will be twice as much. Finding a 70-72 Monte carlo is your best hope, IMO. Maybe a cutlass too. I have Monte disc brakes on my convertible you saw New Year's Eve.
might not be the right place to ask,but your talkin novas so why not.does anyone know how long a 2 door 68/72 nova driveshaft is??? thanx tim
