After reading another post about someone who has a small block in their car that is out of a Corvette, it got me to thinking that somewhere there are an awful lot of Vette's without their original engines in them.

  2. When I was in high school, every kid who had a small block in his ride said it came out of a Corvette.

The guy who sold me my 54 pickup said the 283 that was in it, came out of a vette. I told my dad this and he just laughed and said "I doubt it".

When I had this car I used to get so tired of people asking if the numbers matched.......and they usually looked like that guy in the picture two post's above. Anyway had a sticker on the top part of the winshield that said" no the %$&#%&%^ numbers don't match" That got some interesting comments

  7. Corvettes burn real, real, good in a fire .... the engines dont!

I had a 56 chev with a 63 300 hp 327 in it .... pulled it from the rolled wreck, suffix code still there.

My Buddy just bought a 1975 'Vette engine. Low and behold, yes, its' an L-48.
Pulled the pan and it's a 2 bolt main! All our info was from nastyz28 archives. According to the chart it is a 4 bolt, is a two bolt main any good?
    Lol, don't go there!

Now that's not only funnier than all hell it's also true!

Actually I was thinking a tube of glue in every glovebox. ;)

The small block in my '51 is out of a corvette. And I have the engineless corvette to prove it.

I have run across 3 60's vette engines(according to the suffix codes) one was a 60 270 hp dual four engine, with a receipt showing it was pulled from a wrecked vette in 1961-nice garage find. The other two, a 245 horse 61 283, and a 65 250 horse 327, were both from some long ago engine exchange(one still has the rebuilders tag), and were vette only by the numbers- one was a 2 barrel in a 56 gmc, and one was a garage sale. Of all the 50's and 60's vettes that have passed through my hands, all were engine less

Aren't all of them L-88's? Because most of the owners around my area seem to think so.

Well I can tell you that there were a lot of Corvettes stolen in the 60s just to get the Hipo engines. If you bought a 327 365 or a 427 425 at the burger joint for 400-500 bucks, you can bet that there was a Corvette somewhere being parted out. There were in fact many hot rods with Corvette engines in them back then but of course it didn't take long for the hustlers to lie about the SBC that they were selling. Back then it was not uncommon to see a Corvette parked on the street over night. My 63 327-340 never spent a night in a garage when I had it.

The 265 that came in my old 32 sedan checked out to be a dual quad 56 engine.

Today I'd never believe a Corvette engine claim without proof.

Really not as far-fetched as it might seem. Back in the late '60's-early '70's all Chevrolets (including Corvettes) had 5 year 50,000 mile warranties. A lot of these motors got smoked (I know, I was there) well within the warranty period. The dealer under warranty would pull the old motor and replace it with a "CE" (Chevrolet Engineering) replacement, rather than rebuilding the original engine. They sold the blown engines as scrap. A lot of guys would buy 'em and rebuild them. Big blocks got rerplaced lots more than small blocks, some folks say well over half of the big block Vette's don't have their original blocks. With all of the hulabaloo surrounding engine pads, restamps, character alinement, different fonts etc., I suspect that is probably true.

  20. Mid to late 70s were not a good time frame to expect high hoirses from any car... including vettes.

The L-48 post above....the L-48 was just a base engine 2 bolt main, you had to have the L-82 to get the 4 bolt main and if you ordered the automatic it was a 400 turbo.

Shoot---All the old Corvettes that I know about are sitting in garages and never get driven. So why would they need an engine.

Well some lucky guy has the engine from my Vette. Poor soul has one of the best smog engines GM ever built, what a peice of crap. The stamp on my block indicates the motor came out of 1970 C10 truck. All is good

  29. I've heard that all new Corvettes come with a Lady Bic razor and a polka dot umbrella under the drivers seat.
