For about the last year I've been pushing this 38 Olds sedan in the cl***ifieds for what I thought was cheap money. The car is not mine, but the owner wanted to see someone use it before it rusted away. It's a fairly complete body with no motor or trans. Had a few interested, but no one stepped up. My Son works with the guys grandson, the grandson is telling my son that the end is very near for the Olds. Over the weekend I was offered it and a 50 Plymouth 2 door at a very good price. Neither car has a ***le. I have several problems going on here.

#1) I would have to pick them up. I no longer have a trailer or a truck that is licensed that can pull a trailer. Both cars have been sitting for many years and I don't know if they would roll.

#2) I do not have a place I can keep them for very long, a couple of weeks at the very longest. I might be able to hide one longer maybe, but not two.

#3) I'm not into Oldsmobile cars.

#4) Even at the price I was given, I would have to get rid of one pretty quickly. Up front money is kinda tight right now for me. Given the past record of selling cars, things don't look too good.

So, what do I do now? Sit by and watch them go to the crusher? I could buy them, keep the Plymouth and crush the Olds and make money, or part out the Olds then crush whatever is left and make a bunch of money, but I'd still have to get them to my place..I would be interested splitting the cost (your cost for the Olds would be under $100) and I would help load both cars if I could get someone to drop off the Plymouth, I live about 10 miles from the cars. Pictures are of the Olds, from last year. Gene

    Rusty 1,

Hell if I know... after the body change in 49 they all look the same to me, and I haven't looked at it for a while.

    Do I know you?

It pains me to even think that someone would send something cool to the crusher...

Buy em both and put them on ebay with no reserve. They'll sell. Selling a car is all about marketing - marketing is all about getting the word out. ebay is good marketing.

If that failed you could at least strip off the really good stuff and "hide" the parts easier than a whole car...but that'd be a shame too.

Or.....you could offer to ebay the car for them and take a percentage of the sale, it's better than nothing.

I've done the ebay thing. Cost $40 to list each one. Would have to get $150 to cover expences, for each car. Then I still have to get them here.

I'm going to talk to the owner tomorrow and see what the deal is. Gene

  7. List 'em under parts cars... it'll cost like $6.00

I personally havent ever seen that olds in the cl***ifieds here, but I cant believe that no one has purchased it for $100.

you are 10 miles from the cars? have a son and a tow rope/chain? IDK your area, but can you take gravel roads?

The only thing that would stop me from just tugging it down the road with a rope would be if one or some wheels wont turn on the car.

come to think of it, stuck wheels DONT stop me lol, I dragged an old pickup down 1/2 mile of pavement one time when the gravel roads stopped! The rear wheels were locked tight and it left a trail of rubber all the way down the pavement, looked like someone did a 1/2 mile burnout!

anyways, I cant believe that someone hasnt taken them yet, I hope the car isnt doomed, but maybe youve done all you can

haha, i got ya beat!:D when i was about 12 or 13, my dad bought an old bus full of car parts, sunk past the axles in the ground, stuck brakes, and a bunch of flat tires. of course an intelligent fellow would have just left the bus there and took the parts, but this was my dad, so a good saturday of work to get it exhumed, use the ol farmall tractor to drag it the ten miles home, fortunately the stuck brakes freed up as soon as we got to pavement, but it didn't do anything to smooth out the flat tires, and i tell ya, at that age, it's a bit of a handful to steer a schoolbus full of tons of car parts with flat tires down the road!

  10. Man, Theres a small fortune in parts on that Olds. Look at the stainless trim,
garnish mouldings, grille slats, grille gaurd, bumper over riders, dashboard, trunk hinges and loads more.Even the steering wheel looks good. I remember you tried last year, thats because i have a 37. Yours is a 37 too.

This is a '38 two door sedan. A friend of mine owns it and he's selling it too.

With no ***le, listing them as a parts car is the way to go.

  13. I learned the hard way on that parts car thing.

I listed my '32 sedan, last year, 3-4 times in p***enger vehicles.

    Cost me a fortune...

Then, I put it in parts cars. You can run it in there for 3 months for the cost of listing it as a p***enger vehicle for a week.

I still see alot of people doing it, too...
...and, of course, Ebay won't point it out to you as you're listing it for $40...

There is a problem with this... especially when the car sells for big bucks.
When you sell the car in the parts section, ebay makes you pay a fee based on the cost of the final sale. I don't remember the percentage now but it's a big bite when a car sells for over 1000.00. :Learned this the hard way.....

  15. They charge that "final value fee" in the car ads too, don't they?

Put you phone number or E-mail address in the ad, and it may not even sell through the auction...

I have been watching that since you first posted it in the cl***ifieds and an really suprised nobody jumped on it when you first listed it. If that thing was closer to me like in Fairbanks AK I would have been all over it but It is a bit big to send in the mail and shipping by truck is just too much money.

Briggs&strattonchevy, The Olds was listed several times in the cl***ifieds at $300 because that was what I was told he wanted. I also stated that someone really interested could probably but it a lot cheaper, because that was the gut feeling I got talking to the guy.

Dragging the cars to my house by rope or chain won't work. You would have to come about a mile up a busy state highway, or come all the way through town from the other way. Neither would get good results in this town.

34Gaz, Ya, thats what I keep thinking. All the fenders, the hood (at least the top), the grill and grill suround, and tail lights and tail light stands are all there.

Gl***guy, Have you seen the prices of s**** lately? I think this whole deal started out on the up and up. I stated in every ad that the asking price was set so some s****per wouldn't buy it just to s**** it out. The guy really wanted someone to build it into something. A serious interested person could have bought it for less I had expected. Now it has been advertised on here for over a year and its still there. I take this as a last ditched effort to get it to someone that will use it. I believe it is now priced under s**** prices, and you expect someone to just give it to you? Don't know, maybe if you showed up at the guys house maybe he would just give it to you, but you better hurry. I would s**** it out just because guys with at***udes like yours piss me off.

Cornfieldrodder, I got your PM. I got a PM from someone that may be interested in the Olds. I am going to stop by and talk to the guy that owns the cars tomorrow and see what the deal is. I can't do anything this weekend, wife and my 29th wedding aniverasy, I'd be in deep trouble doing anything that didn't involve her... Going for a ride in the hot rod would be OK, but dragging home two more might not be a good idea (and she knows all about this deal). Gene

hey dodge.. you took my comment all wrong..it was a generalization, where im from junkyards charge you 50$ to take cars, or at best take them for free. and greedy ppl would rather junk them for nothing rathr than let some one take em . hope that clears things up!

    Gl***guy,

I know what you mean, I've heard that story before too. Unfortunately, having been on the selling end of things, I can see their point too. When you list something for sale at a good price, everyone tries to beat you up for a better deal. Some of the perspective buyers can be real *****s. Somehow they have the at***ude that you should be giving it to them because they showed an interest in it. Run into about 4 or 5 guys like that and see what kind of an at***ude you get. After hearing such things for so long, a guy can become irritated. At some point it p***es the "better deal" thing and becomes a "give it to me or go and junk it out" line. The seller reaches the point where they say "if I can't get $**.** for it by a certain date, I'm going to have it crushed." Point is, some will have it crushed, some won't, but you know what his bottom line is and in what time framework a deal has to be made is. Trying to squeeze a better deal will probably only piss him off more.

There is one thing you can count on if you deal with me. If I have something to sell and say I will get $**.** for it or I will have it crushed, I will or I strip off the good stuff and watch them pancake it. I have done it in the past. Life is too short to deal with ***holes. If you want something for nothing, go find it and dig it out of the ground yourself, but don't expect me to find it, dig it out, then give it to you. Won't happen with me.

For what ever its worth, I have bought both cars. Since I have said I will take them, he told me I could get them whenever I had the time, he would keep them for me. (As I expected he would say.) So anyway, the pressure of moving them right now is relaxed a bit, I can figure out a conveint way to get them to my place. Think I'll go out and work on making sure they will at least roll. Gene
