Had a, 84 Subaru with factory air bags. It had it's ups and downs. Sorry.. had to do it. It had advantages in the winter or the mud. The chop looks good. Nice proportions. And... it's yours and no one else has to like it. But patina is just a pretty word for RUST! My negative is this: PLEASE use a period at least once in a while) in your posts! Yes, I AM an old fart. I find it difficult to read posts like yours. I know that I am not the only one who prefers to see stops at the end of a thought. I'm not asking for perfect grammar (as if I would know). I don't want to miss the story behind the build-up of a vehicle. However, when I see posts like that, I turn away. Itssortoflikehavingnospacesinasentence.
I'm 53 and dont like the slammed to the ground look myself. I also dont like most chopped jobs either though. I do appreciate the quality of your work from the frame build shots though. All said and done my opinion means shit its your truck do as you please. If you are happy with it thats all that really matters.
I love reading threads when it comes to bagged stuff. Bags have to be the most controversial (sp?) modifacation done to a car. My favorite is late 40's/ early 50's custom stuff, and some of that stuff was VERY low, and to be able to do that today and still be able to drive it is what bags are about....... some of us have just taken it a bit futher than that. To some extent it is an age thing. For the most part the older guys don't get it, but I've spoken to some guys that had low stuff back in the day that do. Its all about personal preferance...that is why it's called customizing. To all the "Didn't do it back then." guys....yea,yea...whatever. They would have if the parts existed. Fine, put juice one one and then you can say it trad. To me it's not that impressive just that its bagged, to me its about HOW it's bagged, but then again I've been bagging stuff for over 15 years, before that I was doing juice.
Looks cool, and it's gotta be the lowest Chevy truck of that year I've ever seen. Maybe I'm an old fart too, but maybe you should at least put some bumpstops so that it bottoms out with the frame at least 1" off the ground, so that if you somehow lose air, you won't be sliding across the highway out of control in a big sea of sparks. It'll still be incredibly low when you want it to be.
that thing looks deadly and thats coming from a farm kid who looks for practicality in every thing. sleds, truck, semis shit i love anything that just sits way down in the dirt i even thought of slamming a full size fork garbage truck why? why the hell not its cool P.S. girls love air ride it doesn't sqeak as much heh
I dig it......Nice work on the frame & trailing arms. Did you use control arm bushings on the trailing arms? I'm lookin' to fab a back 1/2 like that for my ford. Everything looks better way down low, and yeah its for the attention ain't that what its all about.
Im with the i like it crowed. iv got a 49 that im putting on a s-10 frame im planning somewhere in the futer to put in the weeds. like the chop yours looks good. what color were you planning on?
It's pretty easy to understand really. Car guys have always had a competition to see who can go the fastest, do the longest burn out, have the wildest paint, or the boom boomiest sound system, and since the availability of air bags now it's who can go the lowest. It's a trend, and like most trends it doesn't always make sense. We'll probably look back on this and laugh some day like so many other trends.
Great looking truck, and remember to build it the way you want, thats what makes it yours. I'm sure everyone else on here, including myself, didn't build there car or truck to please everyone else. Good and Bad opinions are in every crowd. Keep up the good work
I'll start by saying I'm in the older crowd at 52. That said I like the chop, tasteful amount in my opinion. As for the Bags and laying frame, the only real problem I have is the dire consequences if a bag or line fails or if you're driven low and blow a tire. Below the scrub line and sliding on metal is no way to have any control. I saw a truck cause a pretty big crash on the freeway when it blew a tire and slid across the road taking out innocent drivers because it was just sliding on the frame. It's not that I don't like the look, it's the safety that bothers me. I suppose guys will continue to do it though and hope for the best .....
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised at the number of 'whys' on this thread too. I was laboring under the impression that lowering and wild stuff was what was done on the Hamb on a regular basis. If this truck been a '32 with home built chassis with an 18" Z in each end and a motor on stilts poking above the roof there would have been a resounding chorus of ass licking encouragement. But it's not. It is a new guy, building what he wants to build, so he gets a cold and wet welcome for the ride he has busted ass building. Great encouragement for a FNG.
The old Bag controversy eh? I like that truck. I like these cars too. Bags may not be traditonal, but they're here to stay and have their place.
like em low and slutty lookin. my gripe with trucks is...........most guys that slam em loose the hauling capacity in the bed. A bagged truck would be cool to drop on ground for loading a motorcycle etc. Or lifting to lower the ramp angle on a trailer. hopefully you lowered and retained your bed capacity. My thoughts
I always get a kick out of people who compare bags on a big rig designed with mucho $$$$$ worth of engineering by a huge corporation with bags adapted to an old car/truck by who knows who with what sort of mechanical ability or engineering sense. not to say this truck looks to be poorly designed, but there are plenty of others that are.
looks good to me. people say why, my answer is why spend lots of money to go reletively slow on a traditional rod? then I answer my own question. because I (you) feel like it.
Geez, nowhere in my post concerning WHY did I demean the truck nor the builder. You guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Give it up already. My question had to do with why drop a vehicle to the pavement when parking it? I thought cars and trucks were supposed to have wheels and tires? Just because I don't get it why are you all making such a big deal about it? Here is a for instance. How many of you get..........Dubs? You know, those big 22-24" wheels? Car jacked 4 foot off the ground? I suppose all of you like those also and see a purpose for them also. I totally understand the building for yourself deal, been there done that and if you don't like my car, take a hike. You've either decided to ignore my follow up post or you found a thread you can **tch and moan about. Get a life. I have no problem with the construction of the truck, the bags, the chop or that he's a FNG. What a bunch of follow the leaders we have here. It was a rhetorical question. Geez.
hey, do you have have any pics showing how you chopped it??....this one looks really good. definatly a cool truck.
Nice truck...don't listen to the old farts...they're are the one's that started the Billet craze, they don't have to much room to talk....haha j/k
Dude I think you're coming back a little strong here. Nobody's making a big deal about it. I'm not into Dubs. I think they're dumb. But other people are into it. So be it. The airbag issue is old. Real old. Ask the boss what he thinks. Knucklehead may be a FNG. But he's been here two years. When did you get here?
The FNG was in response to this earlier quote.............But it's not. It is a new guy, building what he wants to build, so he gets a cold and wet welcome for the ride he has busted ass building. Great encouragement for a FNG. I'm not looking for any pissing matches here. And I didn't see anyone knock Knucklehead, his build or air bags. It was a simple question that just doesn't seem to want to die. Knucklehead didn't get a cold and wet welcome, read through the thread. That is basically what I was bringing out in my post. It seems the subject won't die and it's as though the young man is being or has been assaulted. That is why I said making a mountain out of a molehill. That's all I have to say about the subject. If I insulted anyone, I didn't mean to and I apologize for it. Peace.
It is a very nice truck! There are a lot of us "old farts" around these days and we tend to like the mods that were popular when we were younger. "Different strokes" you know. If you like it , do it. The design, fabrication and completion of the project is what it's all about. Young or old it's really about personal choice and I for one find the variety out there awesome! Thanks for allowing me my two cents, John
Bags, hydros, blocks, cut coils, reversed spring eyes, ... whatever gets it done. Just as long as it's safe and well thought out. Laying frame or Gasser high is just a matter of preference. Some of mine have been super tall or super low - it just depends on what you want to build.
Knucklehead it's a good looking truck and looks to be well built. I like bagged vehicles but not so fond of laying frame but I get why guys like it. Randomrodder I don't see anyone really busting his balls about his truck it's just the typical talk that starts everytime the issue of airbags come up. He has also clearly stated that he doesn't care if guys don't like it because he does. Also I don't think that anyone thinks that you started all of this so don't worry if it wasn't your comments someone else,s would have had the same result. They always do.
