Once again I have thrown my hat in the ring to be a backyard build off contestant . This year is called jalopy showdown. So I know what I consider a jalopy but what do you consider a jalopy to be . Pics would be great. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I call this one "The Jalopy" out of the bunch and I think it suits the ***le pretty well. It's a 28 tudor cut down into a flatbed pickup with no speed equipment and thrown together with whatever they had in the 60's. (i.e. lug nuts on the u-bolts and various others)
From the point of view of the California Jalopy ***ociation from about 1950 through 1963 a jalopy was a 1932-34 Ford Coupe, Sedan, or Victoria. Every jalopy ***ociation across America had their own ideas of a jalopy so there is simply no absolute rule. A jalopy could be a open top, closed top or just about anything. The CJA survived because they had a rule book that was absolute law and was enforced. I could go on but in Los Angeles, where I grew up, when I hear "Jalopy", I think of oval track jalopy races of the 1950's.
I'm not sure of all the rules of this years build off yet but I have heard the year range of the car to be 1928-1940 . All I can picture is a 28-34 roadster , coupe or truck I'm not sure about anything after that. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I see an early fenderless phaeton when I think jalopy-prewar, banger,******* (or folded down). Amos McCoy without fenders.
Look at some of the cars Mickey Rooney drove in the Andy Hardy movies. He drove a jalopy or two in them. Movies were 1940's vintage. You will see exactly what they were at the time.
Would a model a ch***is and running gear , stock wheels and cowl but a home made body be considered a jalopy? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
1927 Model T Coupe chopped up. "Jughead Mobile" Pic #1 Day time Jalopy and my brother Pic #2 Night time Jalopy, same car. Now it's my avatar.
All the "jalopys" ever saw were on Sunday's racing at Gardena Speedway; so a **** Lane would say ...Whoa Nellie and it would have no head or tail lights, Window gl*** and the doors welded or belted shut...
Look up Ascot jalopy races anywhere on the web. On this site also. You will see the definitive jalopy. Whoa Nellie!
