I think you might be a little confused, I'm reasonably certain there are no fiberglass frames in production cars, there are some exotics built primarily using carbon fiber.

By "today's cars" do you mean today's hotrods?

Most modern cars are unibody. Most traditional cars are bodies on a steel frame. The bodies can be made of fiberglass, or steel, or other material, including aluminum.

Most old school guys prefer original steel, but will be impressed with anything that's well done in any material.

That's it. I'm not buying anything from TCI again! Cripe!

  6. How do you possibly answer this thread?
My first impulse was to answer that in the old days we always traditionally used fiberglass frames.
So that is my answer and I am sticking to it.

  7. But it had to be OLD fibreglass frames.

  8. I think post-war was fiberglass frames and pre-war they used bakalite frames???:D

    This is confusing...

Most "new cars" don't use "Fiberglass", they use ABS plastics...big difference. IMO 99% of new cars have ABS plastic bumpers, (and other misc. parts) not fragile Fiberglass ones. Corvettes of the 60's-80's were made of "Fiberglass".

If he means using a Fiberglass body on a steel frame...I wouldn't go asking that here. Sounds impossible. :)

If he means using some sort of unknowm Fiberglass frame under a car, forget I ever posted this. I have no idea about one & I don't ever want to know.

If he means Fiberglass fillers being used in today's cars, sure, it gets used, but not from the factory, and not to fill rust holes unless you are a "hack" by some people's standards...pinholes, that's another story...

If done right, Fiberglass filler should only be used to streghthen body panels subjected to fatigue or rust out, or to repair marine applications (boats)...it's never intended as a substitue for steel...certainly not for "rebuilding" sections of rusted-out metal...IMHO

Not sure where he's going with this one...

By the way, "Fiberglas" is a trade name, "Fiberglass" is a general term. It's trademarked...

  13. I think if a young grasshopper hot rodder is thinking about buliding a car, Glass is a great way to learn. As the young grasshopper gets older, he may get wiser to the real steel.................

The last thing I want to do is harsh on someone who wants to learn about hot rods, but Alex, some advice:

Read. Read as much as you can. Subscribe to as many car related magazines as you are interested in. Buy books and read them. Study the pictures. Learn the history, the names, the influential cars, etc. Immerse yourself. Read.

Then, go to websites such as the HAMB, and READ. Search for topics that you are interested in. Read the responses. Learn from what others post and suggest. The collective wisdom on this site is priceless.

I lurked for a while on the HAMB before I posted anything. I wanted to learn. The HAMB, in my opinion, can be the greatest rodding encyclopedia if used correctly.

    Good luck.

Cool, Mike. What exactly does adding someone to my ignore list do? Will I see no more posts from them?
