What do you guys run for a Horn???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wingnutz, Mar 25, 2007.

  1. Looking for a horn for the Hot Rod... I need something that's a bit louder than the open pipes.

I was looking at this particular model... but I don't think I have enough room in the roadster...!

Look around a boatyard, is that a marine junkyard, and see about an electric boat horn. They are usually chrome-plated br*** or stainless with a nice mounting bracket and look like a shortbelled Model A Horn. They are pretty loud too. Can be mounted under the car or on the frame horn if you like the way they look!!
Another alternative is any six-volt factory style snailshell horn. These are self-grounding single wire horns and with 12V shot to them are very loud indeed. Easy to mount under the car. The larger and long snouted trumpet horns used from the late 30s to the early 50s work well too if you have the room. Many are in pairs (hi & low), some larger more expensive cars have "country" horns that will wake the dead.
Don't forget to insert a screen into the bell of any horn you mount under the car to keep it from getting packed with dirt, stones, junebugs, lovebugs, or small animals.

  4. who needs a horn, i just rev my engine and my zoomies wake the folks up..

but if you must.. one of those neat little boat units work great. You can get em for like 15 bucks from wet marine...

Dad and I went to the junk yard a couple of years ago and bought a bucket full of horns for him to sell at the swap meet. We tested all the horns and out of all of them the one I liked the best due to the tone and sound level was marked Saturn on the back. It looked just like a typical self grounding snail shell horn, but had a wiring plug on it that carried both the grond and 12V wire. Just remember to get the plug too.

Out of a 5 gallon bucket of horns I think we only thew one away because it didn't work.

I beleive it was an 80s model full size ford truck that had a set of dual self grounding horns mounted on the same mounting tab that sounded great (dual tone), but I didn't use them due to size constraints.

    Happy Tooting!

Go to Wally World and buy an air horn (well over 100 dB) and a cup holder that will fit on the window rail. Cut the top out of a beer can (empty it first and it may take several tries) insert horn into empty beer can. Insert beer can , with horn, into cup holder and hang on drivers door.

  10. VW horn.

Cheap, dependable, cool sound, sorta old car sounding, no relay needed and they don't take much room.

The one in my 32 has it's own little bracket - tab actually - welded onto the hood support.

The horns are made in Germany or Mexico.
Either one is ok, I have one of each and quality is similar as is the sound . . . which is sorta like a road runner horn, but not quite.

Buy one new - $12. last time I bought one - and don't throw the two thin spring steel straps that come in the box away.
You can just barely see the straps in the pic.

The straps are a vibration isolating device - use both stacked together.

If you don't use the straps, the horn being hung on the hood makes the most godawful sound you ever heard.

I may run a pair of them on my 31, just for the volume level increase although the 32's done ok with just one.

Right now a little bitty thang that sounds like it came form a Nash Rambler. But I've a got a chrome plated Ahooga horn I am going to run on a side rail next to the engine since I don't run hood sides on the A.

I just mounted a 30's OOGa horn in the T the other day. It sounds pretty cool. Im gonna have to add a screen like someone said earlier. I also used to have a semi truck chrome airhorn in my 50 chevy. It was loud as hell, but great because drivers these days couldn't care less if you are driving vintage tin, that you have poured your heart and soul into, and spent tons of time and money on. They will cut you off just as soon as any other car on the road. The louder the better I say.. thats why Im going to run the zoomies. haha!

I think Griot's (www.griotsgarage.com) has exactly the horns you're looking for. They're small and red and, apparently, loud as hell, and supposedly the same as Ferrari.

Using a 1930's Klaxon, the kind shaped like a hamburger bun. It's a 6 volt but works real good on the 12 I have.

So-Cal sells a modern version of the same thing, but I doubt it's as loud as mine.

    It's on the firewall.

Yes, 6V horn on 12 gives a LOT of bang for the buck...
try a pair of trumpet types from '40-46 Ford on 12...this may well vaporize whatever's in your way.

    Here you go:

    http://www.stebel.it/stebel/index2006_1.htm

Click on "Products" and pick what you want to hear.

I found this on a motorcycle website while googling "Faimm Horns" I think Faimm makes the horns you speak of, but then I found this website- looks like they have top notch stuff.

  19. Quite by accident I found that Ford Tempo/Topaz use what appear to be Fiamm horns. Very, very loud, very, very cheap, junkies usually give **** like that away. They're behind the right side fender.

Pre '67 VW horns are a dime a dozen and are 6V. Perfect to pump 12V to it.

How effective is solid core wire in interfering with sound systems and cell phones? Haven't run any in a long time, curious...

  25. I run a MOTO-VOX. Its an accessory horn for mid 30's cars. Its 6 volt, but run fine and loud on 12 volt. I just don't use it alot. Its designed to run on your headlight bar, but I mounted in lower right of grill.

I picked up this pair of Autolite trumpets for $10 at the local AACA flea market and plan to mount them to the p***enger side frame rail. These baby's will wake the dead on 12V :)

I'm using a repop "beep beep" roadrunner horn....$14 bucks with shipping from e-gay and louder than hell....funny too....hidden under the fender....

  28. This is a close up of thehorn I used. Like I said before it is designed to mount to headlight bar, there are studs on the back which will allow you to use anywhere. The cover is chromed or some are stainless. Quite a few come across E-Bay.
