what do you guys think? selling a loved one for another

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by model A hooligan, Sep 11, 2010.

  1. so i know its not hamb freindly (the car i may be selling) but i know a few of you have aplace in your heart ofr these and once you see mine you will to.

okay so i have built a 69 bug, with almost everything new, custom front end, custom paint. this whole car has an old style to it.

i was offerd 5,500 bucks for it.

i have a 29 ford coupe that only needs wiring, brake lines, lights, body work, and a tittle, to be a running car.

the bug has a speacial place in my heart, since its the first car i built and have won a few awards with it. and i know its not your guy's thing, but what would you do?

    ill post the pics

heres the car im trying to finish, do you think i would have money left over?
it is a bit further along now, it has the wheel wells, and truck and im halfway done with the firewall. the engine and trans are in, shifter, seat, and susp is almost done. needs brakes, wiring, misc, latches, handles, perhaps a radiator ( i have a stock one) and i need a window cut for the front.

is this a good choice? could you justify parting with the other car? even when some of my family is telling me no? i am out of work so saving the money to finish the a will be a long time.

How long have you had it? If you've had it 10, 20 years, maybe you should think about holding onto it. You may regret letting it go.

That said, I think for almost every car, there comes a time when you can just let it go, and move on. There are other cars out there. Just this summer I sold my first build, which was also my first car. It was tough but I love the car I replaced it with too.

Tough decision man, that's one sweet little bug.

  5. thanks guys for the kind words, i thought id get killed for having a bug. iv had it for maybe 4 years.

i do not get much repsect at shows with the bug, i mean from the younger folks, but most folks just shrug and say 'its nice but its a bug'...my father has one as well. we are both building model A's now. if i sale mine he will get rid of his as well.

I'd hold on to the bug and keep piecing the coupe together a little at a time. I think you'll regret selling it. Ask me how I know! :D

"There's an ass for every seat" That being said if you love it, you may not be ready to sell her. So whats the rush on the '29? You own it take your time with it even if it takes a couple years. Than you'll have two loves...........

I owned a couple of Cal Look Bugs 30+ years ago and still have a soft spot for them. You say you were offered $5500. Assuming it is in as good shape as it looks, isn't it worth more than that or has the bottom fallen out of that market as well?

  12. wow thanks so much for the compliments. i realy thought id be hung for owning it let alone retoring it. yes jay Ess, its pretty much in that good of shape. the market for these is mixed, i dont undertand it realy.

i had it listed on a the samba for more but i didnt get any bite one it.

It is up to you.... if you want to finish the model A sell the bug.... I have had to sell other cars to finish a current project.... how long will it take ti get the A done if you don't sell the bug......

  14. probably a few years since im out of work. and i have to find a place to store a car.

id love to keep it. but im trying to think on both sides, selfish side is i want my hot rod running, i also know that once it is, i wont realy drive the bug anymore.

pracitcal side is, iv got 4 cars, 2 of them arent done or run, its a lot of cars to own.

You dont want to have the regret of selling a sweet little car like that, more so since you have built it. Plus when building a car, its cool to have the bug as your cruiser in the mean time, when only having one car and not on the road, you always want to rush it and get it sorted!

  16. cooon, that is true, altho im finding when i throw a little money at the A, and some good solid work time on it. its gets major progress. it started as just a rusted body and a frame.

the bug wasnt much better tho when i started!

Hooligan, I looked over the to do list, and the one thing you need to do is get a" GOOD TITLE IN HAND" for the Model A, before you even think about selling that VW Bug. Work on the little stuff while you are waiting.

    Good luck ........Jack

  18. well im going to AAA and try to get a title, if that doesnt work ill just pay a title service to get one, i seen a place in a add for 150$.

iv contacted the guy on here that does the titles and for some reason he wont help me, he wont even give me the time of day.

it's like every thing else in this world - all goes back to cash flow & storage space - i've never had the pleasure of owning a large shop - so i always had to sell one toy to have room for another one & in my case maybe thats a good thing? - i have built a couple of really nice bugs over the years - i miss them sometimes but it's just iron - i built a couple of VW Trikes - one of them was very special - dem what a hot rod - but i sold both of them & bought a new Honda GL1800 Goldwing - i'm very happy with the new Wing - if i had the space i would have kept one of the trikes - i have had a lot of vehicles come & go in my life - if you are using the bug as a daily driver i would say keep it & peck away at the rod as money & time allows - tom

For sure, I know a couple of guys who put a lot of time and money into projects before trying to get them registered in their name. It wasn't fun, one guy was finally able to get it done, the other sold his for parts.

    Nice VW.

  22. wow drunk man, thats horrible. i have no intentions on selling the 29. it been harder to build, since iv built 9o percent of it by hand. i hope to not get stuck in your freinds boat! thanks for the compliment.

dragsta- whats your reasoning? so far the kind folks have been sharing their minds with me and thats what i enjoy, so far honestly the folks here are having me sway toward keeping the little thing.

If you sell the bug and have $$ in hand and not working then the $$ might go to other things other then the Coupe:cool:

I sold my aviator. Model A. I need the money! DO I miss it? Yes! If I had to do it over again would I sell it? Yes! It took me 4 years to build my model A , I even painted it in the garage. But I'm married and the family came first! I have a 1933 Chevy coupe to work on now! SO things work out :D

  26. thank you zmcmill, i apreaciate it. i think you and carcrazyjohn are right.

i must say this was unexpected from here, i thought id have a total opposite of response. nice to see even us hardcore hot rod guys can have an open mind to other stuff. i v been tosing the idiea around of selling it to do the A and with te spare change buy a nice lifted baja rig, but thats just another toy. i do not use the bug much, but i guess it doesnt hurt to look at it now does it.

  27. heatnbeat. im pretty good at using money only for what i say im going to use it for. i had a 74 karman ghia i sold to to put down the money on the coupe, i needed money to live, but i spent all but 100 of that money on my coupe. so my coupe already has a car's worth of money in it! i didnt car for the ghia much tho.

If you are good with not spending foolishly... I'd sell the bug to keep going on the A. But don't sell if you may go crazy buying things you could have made yourself or don't really need.

Tools or parts desperately needed would be a good reason to sell.

I am 58, ex VW trained tech, started in 1970. I drove a 57 euro deluxe sunroof 365 days a year from 02 to 06. It was starting to rust so my son said sell, and it went.

I just sold an early split dash Split..the best of 4 splits that I have owned as projects. I just won't get to all the cars i own, so I'm selling some off even though I have huge buildings.

The model A old time hotrod you are building is another step forward in life's travels. Look forward.. There are more cars coming your way at some point.

I've owned hundreds of cars in the last 40 plus years...and my favorite one so far came to me 2 years ago. I am also working on a 32 I only have had for 4 years.

    The Bug is cool!

But I'll echo the need to get a good title in hand before selling the Bug. Forget who promises what, until you have the title in your hand, you don't have a title.
