Honestly I like all of the versions so far. The wildly upholstered top really sells late 50's or early 60's show rod for me. I do agree about the spring placement although if you were going to do spring in front it'd have to be chromed like the original, so I guess I'd rather have it all tucked behind the grille. And a chopped grille is fine but just so it doesn't become a tiny heater core sized thing.

Really though, I'd be proud of any version of that car that you have posted, with any mix of the pieces you have suggested. It's a great car to take inspiration from.

my thoughts exactly. i don't know why, i always had that wide striped version kicking around. i considered a solid color tuck and roll or 2 inch pleats but always wanted the wider stripes. and it will be a driver so it's going to need an adequate size radiator.
again, i wasn't looking to improve the original car. i've always loved it. i have it saved to my computer at home.

  7. bicho raro, Mexican for odd duck. It translates literally to rare creature. Bicho is a catch all term, it could be a lizard or a bug or a whatever that no one really wants crawling on them. LOL

I say it's time to get busy and build that Coupe.
Love the striped roof, it's got style and that is what is all about building and driving a Hot Rod.
Stop driving yourself 'nuts' with all these little changes, pull the trigger and make it unique.

That one looks good from a wheelbase and stance standpoint but I'd stick with your show rod leanings with colorful paint and mucho chrome. It does look a lot cleaner with the grille and frame horns leading the way but the spring out front isn't that bad just keep the wheelbase short. I'm not a fan of mixing genres like the Model A roof on a T or the '32 visor-less look on a Model A - it's more confusing than attractive. I'm kind of a Ford purist, I really like the basic shapes Henry gave us to work with.

i want to recess the firewall a couple of inches. i figure i'd get a 5/8" thick aluminum plate and mill 1/4 to 3/8" deep, 1-1/4" wide grooves spaced an inch apart. so i'll end up with 1" wide high spots separated by 1-1/4" grooves.

i'm getting further away from the show rod and leaning more towards a hot rod.

How about quarter eliptic springs? Or for something completely different, Reese load leveling bars converted to springs. We used them on dirt cars back in the 70's here in the northeast, and I have a set just waiting for someone to bite, just pay shipping, or come and get 'em (probably not practical from back home in Indiana, but if someone were going that way...). I'll pull them out and get a picture.

Ok I just dug out one of the Reese bars and got 2 pictures: DSCN1069.JPG Here's a bar and the mount I made for it. The bolt is for setting ride height. The only hard thing to do isdrilling out the original mounting hole from 3/16 inch to 3/8 for the pivot bolt. Use a solid carbide bit and make sure the bar is clamped squarely to your drill press.

Here's a picture of about how it could be mounted to act as a quarter elliptic spring: DSCN1070.JPG I don't have enough room to actually fit it in here, altho I tried. Just a thought...

Had a "A" coupe in the shop a year ago and the guy had built a finned aluminum firewall for it. Even went as far as making sure the fins on the firewall lined up with the fins on the valve covers and matched size and spacing.

Lots of work and honestly although different it seemed like alot of work, money and weight when most of it was covered by motor and other parts.

Honestly I like your first rendition, love the purple color and the Desoto grille. Like looking at a late 50's hot rod mag.
