What do you know about Wire Wheels?

I want wire wheels. Whilst watching a Discovery Channel Chopper show I saw a guy building motorcycle wheels and thought "I can do that" The tools were just like slightly overgrown bicycle wheelbuilding tools that I already own, and the lacing pattern looked simple. I've built a few hundred bicycle wheels. Could do it in my sleep.
Then I thought about the wheels I really want but can't afford: Wires for my Plymouth.
So the question is: Has anybody tried it? Are there parts out there available??

Some years ago, i took a Ford Wire wheel center and some Volksvagen 4 inch rims. and som 6mm steel rod.
And made two 15" front wheels for my Model A.
one came out good and the other one was so and so.

The needed offset made the wheels look ugly so i went to solids.

I fear this will sound like a gold chainer response... but really, why not just buy a set of wire wheels?

Just figured that at about a grand for a set, it would be worth trying it myself if the parts exist at a reasonable price.
Failing that, anybody got a set of 15" 5 on 4.5 they wanna sell?
