yet another vote for falcons and novas.

my girlfriends daily is a 61 falcon 2 door wagon. she loves it, i can't get her out of it long enough to do body and paint, so she gets it in primer! the beauty of these cars, they're cheap, small, dead simple to work on, everything is available for them, and easy to upgrade to more modern drivetrain and suspension etc. can't beat the utility of a wagon either! i've hauled lots of shit in mine...hauled my triumph from austin to colorado after i bought it back!

for myself i'm workin on a 50 chevy pickup. many of the same benefits as above.

I drove my 54 Chevy every day for several years. No exageration, I had sold everything else to make mortgage payments while I was in fire school.

Mostly, I keep a 67-72 SWB around at all times for driver duty though.

i have had this as a daily for the last 3-4 years, i just recently bought a newer truck because i'm planning on moving and need to haul a few cars and once my race car is done i'll need something to tow that too. unfortunetly i'm going to have to sell it now (check the classifieds, shameless self promotion) in order to help out with $ for the move. one day i will own another because to me it's pretty much the perfect old daily. with a nova clip, 12 bolt rear, 350/700r4 it makes a perfect driver that's decent on gas and i can still throw junk in the back or sleep back there but it's also got a fold down rear seat out of a 70's dodge station wagon so there's room for 4 people pretty comfortably too. i gonna miss this one once it's gone.

My Model A is pretty good, for the past four summers it's been my only car actually, so I don't have a choice. Sometimes I take the parents car so I can listen to the radio for a change (since I don't have one). Decent mileage and reliable as hell. I can't wait to get my truck on the road so I can hang the Model A up and have enough time to pull it apart.

    some great ideas here.......

the guys from warmer climates have a distinct advantage over us snow laden areas.....

i'm usually cutting time pretty close on getting to work so in the winter i need something that will idle while i go back in to eat my breakfast and brush my teeth...

like most of you here, i'd rather give $5000 for something that's cool and something that I can work on than give $5000 for something that someone else has already worn out.....the usual factor, around here, is what kind of condition the body is in........

i guess the 64 cut off date isn't really necessary.......anything OLD and workable on the cheap....

ive always wanted a early suburban. a 60 would be cool. not to big, not to small. would still turn heads and be fun and practical.

  15. My 50 chrysler was/is a pretty decent old driver. Iwas following Keven Lee's {?} build up of his plymouth wagon. The brake and front end upgrades are really appealing . and I found out wilcap does make an adapter for a sbc bell housing tranny to my flat 6 so a new rear end and 700r4 combined with all those other goodies will turn it into a dependable roadhog. Since Irewired it last year, a twelve volt swap is in the works so I can make the torque converter lock up work.

Only thing I would change is having an overdrive trans and a DOHC modular motor.

I think if I had the money to do it I would have to have Two daily drivers.
    1. 49 Ford Shoebox with a 302 automatic so Mammah would be able to use it too.
    2. 46 to 52 Ford 1/2 ton. I think a 300 six with a 4 speed would be excellent.

I didn't go through all the posts yet but my 48 is my daily. Has been on and off since I got it. There's only one downfall. The car eventually loses it's cool with you. Don't get me wrong. I love my 48 and it is not for sale at any price. But it's just not that exciting to drive anymore.

    I know.....Whaaaa!

It is the perfect daily driver. Parts are easy to get. It's got heat. The top comes off for summer cruzing. It's got a bed to haul parts! It's got a hitch to pull a trailer. Hell both the RPU and the 32 came home in the 48.

Been through a lot with that truck that's why it will never be for sale. I think I've put well over 150,000 miles on it since 1989.

    I think a 61 Impala or Lesabre would be a great daily driver.........Lowered w/Supremes

  20. After reading all of this I'm thinking I'd like to have an early 60's Falcon with an inline. My crew cab 5.3 only gets 16.5 mpg.

I completely know what you mean. It becomes just another car after a while and you don't really think twice about it. I have a trailer hitch on my Model A and tow stuff with my trailer. Don't really think about it until people come up and start asking what the hell I'm doing.

64 Impala SS with 327, 4 speed. Turqouis body with white top & white interior! Reason? My brother had one when I was 16 and he let me drive it once in a while. I felt like I was cock of the walk in that in car!

Man i miss my old one. drove it daily for 6 months till i sold it. car was so dependable. middle of winter and 5 degrees out she fired right up and drove to work in 8 inches of snow. My girl friend dove the thing when ever she could. It was the only old car ive had that she would drive well except my 72 rivi but thats like a new car

    64 Riviera.

You get AC, power steering and power brakes from the factory.....with one of the best looking cars ever made. Just lower it and go.

I know what you mean I really want to get a different daily driver, and there are other cars i would consider . . actually been thinking a lot about a chevy AD pickup or suburban . . but the thing with daily drivers is once I get them dialed in and all the work is done by me so i know it's right. . . . it would be really hard to trade for something with unknown craftsmanship that may let me down when I need it.

old cars are super reliable and trouble free. . . once you get the bugs worked out. . . but whenever I see a car i'd rather have I realize I am not ready to take on a new set of troubles.

If anyone has a completely debugged, totally reliable, nearly stock 47-52 chevy truck with a straight six that wants to trade though. . . I am all ears
