I dig those. Good find. I, too recall seeing those behind cars on trips in the 60/70's.
Once we were behind a dude and that wheel was occillating like crazy. My Dad pulled up to let him know,like wouldnt be telegraphed to the whole car, and the fella said with no weight in did that.

 

Not really, he could just put in the bed of his pick up.
