Ann Landers has a 4 bolt on the engine stand. Dear Abbey is a Ford chick. Thats why they have two columns. Or was it four columns?
I always understood that stove bolts were cast iron; like early Chev six pistons. Perhaps the inference was that they melted stove bolts to make Chevvy pistons; early recycling?
The old Chevys had a lot of slotted head screws on the engine and elsewhere,a fastener commonly used on cast iron stoves........... Did you all know a mundane 235 Chevy has a four bolt rear main?
For all those who think that the last ten pages were a waste of time..................Lighten up, it's called humor. A liitle chuckle after a hard day at the grindstone. WTF is wrong with that?? Go in there and pinch your ol' lady on the ass and maybe you'll get a little. Anyway it's not O/T as I learned about stovebolts .
If you don't know the difference between a "4 bolt main and a 2 bolt main" it won't make an difference to your engine built.
Agree!...4 bolt caps dont mean shit,Ive had the undesirable 2 bolt motors built right and they turn 7 grand...two of my worst hated words..."4 bolt" and "crate" motors...some of the best motors Ive ran were $400 junkyard specials!.....my $.02
correct , you gotta learn somewhere right .. I'm sure all of you didn't know what a 4 bolt main was out of the womb
For the guy making reference to the Scotts we wear kilts for a reason zippers scare the shit out of sheep I never screwed a sheep but someone said I had woolite breath .Back off the poor guy maybe he's in need of help !!
I know a handfull of guys in their late 60 to early 70s, car guys by their own declarations, that wouldn't know the answer to the original question. It's not because they're dumb (well, not all of em) or uneducated, they just never had the reason or desire to reference anything related. But now that the serious reply is done, I find myself without a smart ass remark to go along with the rest that I already read through.
Here Here! x2, that's the difference in maturity level; age and wisdom don't always go 'hand in hand' but I would like to think that one picks up a little tolerance along the way even though we're all still little boys when it comes to our toys. Funny how some of the youngest are more respectful and some of the oldest are more anal! This place can still be courteous without resembling a 'sensitivity class. I'm just an old f*%# with plenty of experience but I can't keep up, nor do I care to, with every new bit of slang for example; does that make me a 'dumb ass?' I don't think so.
And then got it wrong - the FE stood for Ford Edsel, the "Heavy Duty" version was known as FT for Ford Truck. As for sizes they came in 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428 and the FT 361, and 391 The first one was the 361 in the Edsel, hence the name And Don't forget the MEL (Mercury, Edsel, Lincoln) that came out a year later and was related (but different) to the FE and came in 383, 410, 430 and 462 inches. And to keep it on topic, some of these came with 4 bolt mains
well if you learn somthing every day it will ceep your mind off stupid tings like hondas drugs and eurupean cars just cidding i run my 283 8500 rpm an i dont have to have 4-bolt block if you look at crashed engines the weak spot is where the second bolt i added in block, when compression is to high or mowing weight is to high evrything is mowing and the weakest thing brake ken sweden
I knew you were going to get your Balls busted as soon as I read the title. I'll probably hear some "Off" comments on this statement too: The only smallblock Chevy motors (I built) blew up on me (3 of them) had 4 bolt mains. However, I never blew the bottom end of a 2 bolt main block (I built about 25 of them). The power of these engines were similiar, and the machine work was done by the same (Reputable) machine shop.... and yes, I do check the clearences on everything before assembly. Another unsolved mystery in life, I guess.
Oldfart.......hats off to being humble enough to ask! I knew the Hyenas would attack afterwards. I'll venture to say there is not a Hamber on here who has not learned something from another Hamb post. I love it when a bully gets put in their place.......a new fella at my job introduced himself while shaking my hand as the kid who stole your lunch money.....I said I was the kid who punched you in the stomach and took it back!. Hang in there Oldfart they mean no harm!
I thought the HAMB would always be a nice place to post where you find like-minded people who like to help. WTF? Some of the posts on this thread make me want to bail on the whole HAMB thing. I guess those might be the same people that will honk at you while in their car but would never have the balls to say anything to you in person. Thanks to all the nice posters who helped out.
