What does your old car smell like?

Dont ya love that telltale smell of an old car interior. Mine smells a little like gasoline and exhaust, peppered with hues of a rotted back seat, topped off with the slight nose of a green pinetree. kinda smells like...... well, victory. What's yours smell like?

 

Depends on the car. My 56 Dodge smells like vintage rat turds. Every remote nook and cranny is filled.

Mouse piss.......
Really! This evening I had to break down and put a blue tree in there. The recent heatwave, coupled with rain every day has really made the critter residue apparent... Good news is, the mouse hole in the headliner right above me makes for interesting "sprinkles" on my ice cream cone.....I'm entertained easily.....

 

I just got back from the drags... Mine smells like race gas and burnt rubber.

If they would bottle that smell, I'd wear it as cologne....

A nice blend of aging upholstry, marlboro light (I no longer smoke, so I enjoy the faint lingering scent), exhaust, Fendi perfume and orange scented air freshner (the kind in the little glass vial with a cotton stopper at the opening.)

Smells like;
Sweaty leather seats with a whiff of mold when it's damp from the carpet backing right below the cowl vent. Anti freeze if I just added some to the overflow bottle and it didn't really want or need it.
And then there was the smell of the damp spots on the wood of the flatbed after those 10 cheerleaders had been sitting on it at that homecoming parade, all excited and all...

Mine smells like mouse piss and shit, and hot trans fluid. For what it's worth, drier sheets help a little. I do know what you mean about that smell old cars get, of vintage materials. I kinda like it, if it's all there is, and no animal urines. Old GM cars are the strongest smelling, anyone here with a 60's or 70's GM car will know that plastic smell a mile away...

 

I had one that smelled like cat piss when a local tomcat got locked in for a week.

another one smells like rat shit, my convertible falcon smelled like dead rat last week until I pulled out the back seat and got the bodies out.

My 65 Galaxie wagon smelled like old vinyl that was outgassing.

The best was the 37 Truck, smelled like vintage oilcloth, gear oil and gas.

my truck smells of oil and mildew

the oil comes from the leaky valve covers spewing on to the exhaust manifolds them wafting in thru the many holes in the firewall
after a long drive you get a nice film of it on your face and can even taste it when you lick your lips!

mildew cause the seat I put in was sitting in a car with no windhield for a couple years

 

mine doesnt have a smell any more i drive it to much to notice. but from what i remember it smells like burnt oil old uphosltrey (sp) and a slight mix of coolent from my cheep ass chrome t-stat housing leaking onto my intake. And prob cigg smoke since i do my best smoking in that thing

 

best way to keep mice outta yer car is to drive the suker everyday! anyone know if they still sell those black and white skunk air fresheners with the curly tail? I grew up with those in my brothers cars and cant find them anywhere.

 

The '51 Merc smells like the garage...since it has no doors/interior or trunk.

The garage smells like hot ground metal and gasoline/old oil. A good combo, but I doubt it would sell well as a cologne.

Other cars in my drive smell either like cigarretes, mouse piss must (10 years later), or hot fake leather.(mmm...that 30 year old new car smell!)

The Chevy truck smells like...well...my musty, leaky, rusty Chevy truck. I think it's about what all Chevy trucks smell like...eventually.

This brings up an interresting observation:

If blindfolded, and placed into your various cars...would you be able to tell what car you were placed into only on smell alone? I know I would.

Now, what does this thread have to do with building our cars?

Maybe we can change this post to "how do you keep your car from smelling like..."

I know I could use that tech. The vanilla air freshners they sell at Murray's remind me of sun tan lotion...which I never use...

i wonder if the "rudy" truck that sold for 26 THOUSAND DOLLARS still smells like piss,,haaha,,i was wondering that the other day when i was welding on the floor of this old impala and it smelled like piss..

The roadster smells like fun. If it is running & sitting still has gassy exhaust smell from rumpty rump cam. I go to Taylor to Thirsty Thursday every week, 45 mile trip one way, every other week take the roadster, usually driving home about 11 PM @ 60 or 65 mph. Cool temp outside, amazing what you smell out in the country, every mile or so is a different smell, usuall good except for when I pass the chicken houses between Thorndale & Rockdale.
All the project cars with doors & windows smell like rat shit so I usually gut the interior when I bring them home, keep rat poison in all the project cars. The 32 coupe body inside smells like fiberglass, floor repair, never painted.

My buddy and I love that 60s-70s GM car smell, and we're both Ford guys. When we go out together to look at cars, we always check out the Chevys to see if it has "that smell." It is our opinion that the stronger and more quality of the GM smell in a car, the better it has been taken care of! I bought a '65 Riv GS once partially because I liked the smell of it so much. It had "that smell" in spades baby!

The original cracked windshield smelled of vinegar, or acetic acid, or maybe acetate. Really.

I wish the car smelled of oil, grease, and exhaust fumes, but it doesn't have a drive train yet, so I'll have to be content with the smell of rust.

My 54 ford smellled like dead gas when I first got it.

The worst car smell was a 49 Chevy fleetline I had with an accessory steering wheel. Those of you that have had them will know what I'm talking about & to those who don't, it's worse smell than a rotting corpse. After I finally figured out what was stinking so bad I threw the steering wheel in the trash.

sounds like my car, but it also smells like dust on the inside...as for the oil/trans/gas and exhaust smell,i'd bottle that and wear it if i could!
