I have a 55 chevy pickup with the number fo 113 gf stamped on the passenger front side of the engine. Can any hamber tell me if its a 283 or is it a 265??? Thanks in advance!!
kinda hard to say, if it's a 56 then it's a 265, if it's a 57 then it's a 283. If it's later then it could be something else. They reused the letter suffix codes for different engines in different years. What's the block casting number and casting date? They're on the back of the block, above the bellhousing area. Number is several digits, date is a letter followed by two to four numbers like A 12 6
According to this http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-5.php It should be a car engine 265 Manual trans with ac. Or OOOPS a 57 283 or a 65 283. The same source has a list of block casting numbers. Those suffix guides aren't always 100% totally accurate but they usually come close.
One problem with the suffix guides is that they don't explain that the number sequence for 56 is not like it was in later years...if it was a 56 it would say F56GF And if it were a 57 then it would not have the leading zero, it would be F113GF so it's probably something later...1965-66 283, perhaps
Are there side mounts cast into the block? 55, 56, and most of 57 (maybe all) were front mount blocks.
Yep no side mount bolt holes would show that it was a 55/56/57 block. Orcella, if you go here http://www.nastyz28.com/decode.php and check through it, it's pretty much a lesson book on how to decode small block Chev V8 engines. The good thing and for some the bad thing about sbc engines is that it is so simple and easy to swap the engines up through the early 80's Just pull one out and stick another in and go again in a lot of the trucks like that 55. In the 60's and 70's you could have towed that truck into most any garage with a fresh engine in the back and drive it away with that engine swapped into it at 5 pm if not at noon. It's good for the guy who needed his pickup fixed so he could drive it to work the next day and bad today for the guy who is dead bent on having the "original" engine in his truck but after all this is a hot rod board and engine swaps are the norm rather than the exception.
56 and newer had the oil filter, and some 57s had the bolt holes.... I'd be looking for the numbers on the back of the block, if it was mine.
