What Exactly am I looking at?... it looks like a Chevy 216 with a few too many intake and exhaust ports?
    thanks for the knowledge!

Counting the exposed cylinder walls down the side ... looks to be a straight 8? Were Buicks the only OHV straight 8s?

  6. Walk around it and count the spark plugs or spark plug holes.

My first thought was Buick straight 8, but the valve cover has 3 hold-down studs ...

Yeah that was my though as well... I've never seen a Buick with that type of valve cover, or that skinny...

These are the only other pics I have....

There are some differences in the OP's motor and Squirrels, but they look very close. Maybe same family but different year or cid.

The first motor has a different valve cover and is 3 bolt. Also, on the first motor, at the bottom of the exposed cylinders there appears to be a flat plateau-like area running the length of the motor, and squirrels is different (sloped). Squirrels also appears to have more exterior block webbing.

Here's a '31 Buick engine ... looks like it has 3 wing nuts on the valve cover.

And the exposed head bolts near the ports seem to match well with the Buick straight 8 that Squirrel posted.

I would guess it's an early Buick straight 8. Look for the number....

That side cover looks really similar. The oil fill is at the opposite end of the block, though.

    I count 12 ports which makes me believe it's a 6 cylinder.

I think ( I might be wrong... I usually am acording to my wife:)) but I think the buick motors only use 4 ports for the induction... I'm not really sure how that would work... but hey I'm no scientist

Intakes are siamesed, so: E(II)EE(II)EE(II)EE(II)E. Eight exhaust ports, four intake ports.

In fact it's quite hard to find an American straight-eight that doesn't have some sort of siamesed porting.

No it isn't. It has three soft plugs (freeze plugs), GMC 270-302 engines have 5 freeze plugs.. Chevrolet 216-235 have two.

Having had three 12 port GMCs at various times I am here to say "No it dosn't." Every 12 port I ever saw was a cross flow engine. It is a 4 intake port and 8 exhaust standard old common Buick eight.
