Ok, so I know I'm gonna sound like the biggest idiot in the world, but I need to know what fluids to run in my 292/ 3 speed combo. The guy I bought the engine from said to use 20/50 oil in it. So I figured I would give that a try. Not sure what to put in the trans though. Please bear with me, this is my first build. Thanks for the help.

Well this could be a major conversation as everyone uses different fluids oils for many different reasons. Here is what I use in all vehicles I own. I use Mobile 1 10/30 in the engines with Fram filters. I use Lucas transmission fluids and rear end oils as well as their suspension greases in my grease gun. I feel these are great products that have served me well. I used Mobile 1 in my 99 GMC pickup for the past 10 years and have 262,000 miles on it without ever touching a nut on the engine or transmission. So when I bought a new GMC the oil went into it too.
You just have to go with what you feel confortable with. There is lots of stuff out there to use. Google "Engine Oil Comparisons" and see what you think...

There is no way I would ever put a Fram filter in anything I own. There are a number of posts here in the archives and on Hotrodders.com about the failure rates of Fram filters, they seem to have put profit over quality, another good reputation going into the ****per. When I put my 302 in my '54 I put a Holley red pump back at the tank with a Fram filter ahead of the pump within 2 hours run time the filter paper plugged up the pump and ruined it,Thanks Fram! NAPA filters are highly rated as are Motorcraft & AC so looks like that will be the way to go.

Castrol 20/50 or Rotella T 15/40 are good choices. I use Castrol gear oil in the rear and trans and never had a problem.

I use Royal Purple and AC filters. I've read some of the similar things about Fram filters that Jeff posted above and quit using them.
