I believe he is talking about a Sedan.

So maybe this Thread is typical, as far as people reading what they want to read.

And as far as my Ardun suggestion, that was totally serious.

The kids that are too cool to own a SBC usually bring up the fact that they are popular, easy to find, and affordable to hop up as strikes against them.

Since the Ardun is at the opposite end of all those things, it must be the perfect choice...

Greetings

FWIW

There is a hot rod shop in Oklahoma City, that has put an overhead cam Ford engine and auto trans in a 40 Ford coupe with out cutting firewall and floor. I think they also did not cut fender wells. They were using Mustang derived suspension and wiring harness out of the donor Lincoln,

At the SW Nationals in Okla. City this year there was a 40 coupe from Arizona
that had a dual overhead cam Ford engine in it. It even had air conditioning. I tried to determine if any cutting was necessary but it was so close, I was not able to tell.

Both looked impressive and the Arizona car was a real sleeper with original patina. Love to see it hook up with a Chevrolet powered 40.

SBF can be used, by going to the "Bronco" style rear sump oil pan and oil pump pickup tube.

Ford Motorsports has them as well. HAPPY RODDIN'

Beautiful, isn't it...

Not mine.

Just a pic I found...

( but I can dream about having that in an old Allard, or a 3W Deuce Coupe...:D)

You didn't mention which '40 you were inquiring about. If it's a pickup any engine will fit.................in back in the bed. Then if you've got a Chevy under the hood you'll be able to haul it anywhere you want without worry.
Hey!! Just trying to be helpful:D

In all fairness, there is no need to bring up the SBC, since the OP is not interested in using one.

Henry said a SBF will fit with a shorty waterpump kit ( I****ume one of those awful looking serpentine setups ), and major hackery of the front crossmember ( not as visible as a set back firewall, but still a lot of work to put back to stock, if needed )

To me personally, that proves nothing other than the willingness and ability to put a square peg in a round hole.

So again, to me personally, in this case the SBF would be out.

If I liked V6 engines, which I don't, I'd look at Fords SVO V6 or the supercharged V6 ( and in Europe they have a 24V Cosworth designed version of the old Cologne V6 )
Not Trad at all, but neither is a serpentine on a 5.0

Those would still have decent HP and usability.

Another one to consider...

The Buick 215 was sold to Rover, and used in many of their vehicles.

Land Rover was one of them.

Around 2006 Ford owned Land Rover ( shortly after the license built 215 was dropped, but I've read there was a period it was produced while it was Ford Owned )

I don't know how much better that one would be, as far as fitting the '40 engine bay.

But you could slap a Ford emblem on its valvcovers, and not be wrong.

And you'd have an interesting time explaining it to people who think you are ( if you are into that sort of thing...)

This may come as a surprise to some people but there are individuals who will do the work to maintain the continuity of their ride. Square peg round hole not hardly. I'm in this thread to help this guy. Not everyone wants a********. For the record there are vee belt options that will work, I'm just giving this easiest most cost effective route I know because that's what I think is needed in this case. I'm picking up the sarcasm in just about every thread I jump into when it comes to this subject. It's getting old.

So am I.

And I'm pretty sure I suggested more Ford engines to him than you did.

And although limiting myself to just one manufacturer is not a restriction I'd put myself under, if you do there are several options.

The 5.0 is one, but it has some serious clearance issues.

Pretending that isn't so, isn't really helping the guy IMO...

Henry and Metalshapes have given me the most food for thought, I hope they don’t get mad and go away! I appreciate all the comments, even the ones that got off topic from the original post. Perhaps there should be a thread as to why some of us have a Ford in a Ford thing, but that’s for another thread. I’m building this car to drive and while I have no fear of driving a flathead across the country I know a later model engine is more practical. At this point I don’t even have the car but I do have one without an engine and trans that I am planning on picking up late this summer when I go south. I would love an Ardun set up but the price and practicality puts it out of the question. I have a 53 Merc in the shop that could be an easy solution as well as a DOHC from a Mark VIII. The Merc is still on the list of possibilities but the DOHC is out because I am tired of computers and I’m not attracted to modernized street rods. That’s why I was attracted to the HAMB in the first place. It would be most helpful hearing from those who detail the pros and cons of the engines that will work within my parameters, but I don’t mind the off the wall suggestions like the Essex. All is food for thought, even the GM options.
At this point I am leaning towards Henry’s solution but would like to hear more pros and cons as well as other options like the 292, Y blocks, etc.

I've got a project 40 coupe with a 5.0 sitting in it right now.
After a ton of placement issues,
I cut way too much out of the firewall.
Fortunately it was really beat up as there was a large pontiac in there before.
Once the engine was set in place,
(using a 90 lincoln rear sump oil pan)

On the plus side,
the engine and transmission (big aod) can go in and out bolted up.
Not that it is difficult to line them up in the car,
it's just easier together.
If the firewall was tighter it would be a PITA to bolt the top bolts too.
I've been holding out on filling the firewall bottom,
but it will be a removable hump to make it easy to work on.
The firewall cut is exactly right for pulling the engine in and out.
A half inch more would be better as it did rub though.

If the engine was set up a little higher and a little more forward,
the firewall could have more clearance.
The downside is the steering and radiator issues.
The fan is electric and is in front of the radiator,
like it was with the flathead.

Hope you can learn from my trials and errors.
I'm happy with it although the firewall will need modifications.
The 5.0 can be made to look like a 60's style 289/302,
as long as the newer HEI distributor isn't used.
The trickiest part for your project is finding an adapter for a 302 to the original 3 speed.
I've never seen one although haven't looked either!

Good luck!

TP
