What rearends will squeeze into a 1954 Ford Customline, and will handle a 390/C6. This is a*no-budget rod* so I'm taking all suggestions and Idea's...I'm not afraid of junkyards or tearing one out of a brokedown heap to save cash. Thanks
I just finished putting a late 70's Maverick 8 in. under a 55 Ford, moved the spring perches in about an inch on each side and it went right in. Overall width is about the same, just a little narrower.
We had an S-10 rear from an early two wheel drive that actually lived behind a 454/tunnel ram in a '55 Chevy truck.
8.8 outta explorer should fit..they do in shoeboxes.about the same dimensions.the 4x4 manuals are rumored to be limited slip..so posi..
Use the almighty Ford 9 incher!!---Neat big meaty axles----Easy to get parts!! 3.25 gears for good milege!!----3.78 for performance!!-----Don
Ford NEVER used a 8 inch with a 390. Ford always used a heavier duty rear end. Find yourself a 57 - 59 Ford rear end or if money is no object ... Have Currie build you one of their street rods specials ( 56 inches wide ) that are a little more narrow than the 57 - 59 Ford. The Currie Stage II Rod & Show Car Rearend is for more performance orientated cars that need more rear end behind them than a 8" can provide or for the customer who likes to stomp on it on occasion! The stage II is a 9" Ford and would include the 100% new 9-Plus round back Hot Rod housing and 31 spline performance axle package, 11" drum brake kit, 3rd. member with the original Ford gear case, Currie forged alloy big pinion bearing support, 1330 yoke, T.S.D. limited slip differential, and your choice of gear ratio. but they are NOT cheap
PM 46mopar, he just swapped his out and he's got a big ol caddy motor in his. Er, ah, I mean his wifes car, that is... I'm not sure what he used, but he said it dropped right it.
I put an 8.8 out of a 90s Ford explorer under a 1950 F-1 Panel. Fit great. make sure the explorer is a 5.0L mine had disc brakes and posi w/3:73. all straight out of the donor.
I put a 57-59 nine inch under my 55' custom 500. Worked tits. I also found a 9 inch under a Granada, it's the only one I have ever seen, it's way narrow.
Holly shit THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO...off to the junkyard to find me EXPLODER REAR OR MAVERICK! THANKS AGAIN.
therangerstation.com has a ton of information on the 8.8 ford axle. If you want to put horsepower to them, get a 31 spline like in most explorers and f150's, a lot of rangers and mustangs only had the 28 spline.
I put a Maverick under my '54 Ranch Wagon. As already said its a tad bit narrower than stock which makes the rear wheels/tires fit a easier. An 8.8 out of an early Ranger will work as well. The later Ranger 8.8's are a couple of inches wider. There are the narrower 8.8's out there along with a bunch of 7.5's
8.8 out of an Explorer is the most readily available rear in junkyards these days. I’ve ubiquitous 9 inch rears have pretty much dried up in most areas. Explorers have 31 spline axles, and most that I have seen are either 3.55 or 3.73 traction lock units. The two door models often had 4.10 gears.
The 52-54 Stock rear is 57.5" width here are the Explorer Specs. https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Ford-8_8-axle.shtml They really are a no fit because of the 52-56 shallow rear wheel wells. So you might want to check this out. http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/explorer-8-8-rear-end-bracket-welding-install-pictures.77673/
