Dare to be different. Put down that Street Rodder magazine and back away from the credit card.
How about a Ford axle with a 2" drop and a Posie's spring?

I put a Mustang IFS under my '40 years ago and I really liked it. However, when I built my '36 pickup that I am driving now, I kept the wishbone and upgraded the steering with a rebuilt '40 box. Knowing what I know now, I would not have put the IFS under the '40.

You cant beat an original axle, with or without a drop . Independent front ends are streetrod stuff, a fad that is passing, as is the ratrod fad.

  5. I agree 100%. IF I wanted to drive a mustang too, I would buy a mustang two.

Corvair under mine, has a Mustang/Pinto rack, done in the 70s. It drives well and handles well. I would prefer the Mustang II or the original if I was running it fenderless.

I like the idea of a stock axle. How does it ride and handle?
What springs do I need and how about a stearing box?

all of this is personal preference as for being a fad people have been doing ifs sinc the corvairs. i personally grew up with the old straight axle vehicles i will take ifs unless it is a non fenderd car m.02 worth tom

  9. Traditional site..my guess most responses will be with the traditional stock axle with drop. I've had both, I'll take the ride of IFS over stock. Bottom line, my opinion or the others is an opinion (and you know what they say about opinions), you are stuck with your choice after all of us are done spouting off. Good luck with whichever way you go.

It boils down to personal preference and your build plan (that’s not been mentioned)
You can always roll the axle front end out and put in the mustang thing later if you change your mind ……. little harder to go the other way.

I put a IFS on my 39 Ford and like it,Disk brakes are better,no wish bones,If lowed does bottom out to frame.I have reg spindles and could be lowered more with dropped spindles.
Think it a matter of choice. You will spend 2to 3 k to do it with afther market stuff.

I am going to chop the top, and run fenders. I want somthing that will ride nice and handle ok. Putting a small block or a y block not sure yet with an AOD. Also will be putting a 8" rear under it. Here is more info to ponder!!!!

What's your goal? If you want the approval of traditionalists, use a dropped Ford axle. If you want good handling and performance, go the Mustang II route but, as others have stated, don't go fenderless.

What's to be confused about?? If you want a Caddy ride, buy a Caddy. You've got a Ford, so stay with Henry's front end. VERY driveable, and it's all there. Up grade the old components and drive the wheels off it. JMO:cool:
    Re-arc spring for 1",new king pins,new tie-rod ends. You're good to go.

remember when IFS threads got closed?

just drop the stock axle and put your thousands saved into a nice flathead!

Maybe this will help. Reversing the STOCK spring eye will lower your car 1 in. Installing a 4 inch dropped axle will lower it an additional 2 in, but will require dropped steering arms. Call up Posie and ask how much drop you can expect if you install one of their reversed eye springs. I think it will drop it more than 1 inch as they make the entire spring. Plus the spring will settle and may end up giving you close to a 2 in. drop by only changing the spring. Also remember, you need to have adequate tire/fender clearance when you drop it really low. Right now, the traditional solid axle is "in" and your truck will still ride like a stiff truck.

It does not have to be stiff, dialed in your spring and the right shocks, will get you a decent
    ride.

Well inmy opinion, but this is an opinion, the 35's and 36's need the stock style front end, I just do not like seing an IFS front end under the fenders, and they do show quite a bit in the front of the trucks when you walk past them, or as they are coming toward you. I have a 35 and it is getting a dropped axle in the front, I will sacrafice a little on the ride quality, (very little if done right) for a much nicer look. Jim

I bought my 4 in. dropped axle from Magnum and got the one that is 3/4 inch narrower than stock 40 axle for better tire. fender clearance. Check to see if they have it for your truck. If you do use it you will have to change the length of your drag link and your tie rod.

    Wise words.
Hair pins and a drop axle. Simple and sweet. Put hair pins and a 4 inch drop Bell axle over the spring under my 37.

Next Problem, split wishbone or hairpin?

  30. I do not think you will have to do either. The top of the axle will be a little closer to the frame with the reversed spring eyes. The dropped axle will raise the center of the wheel up but will not raise the wish bone. The axle manufacturer should be able to assist you with this question.
