I need to put a new ring and pinion in my '40 Ford rear. I have a project '30 A coupe with mild '51 Merc flathead and '93 S10 T5 (#1352-234). Trany has 1st =3.76 and 5th =.72 . Rear tires are 31" diameter. What ratio gears would work best all around? 3:54, 3:78 or 4:11? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best all round ratio, go with the 3.78s. They`re a compromise between 3.54s which are for top end speed and 4.11s which give you good acceleration...

I have to second what Brizey said. Most of the old timers I have asked about this said they have used all three outside of using a quick change and the 3.78 is the best all around set up.

Have to concur. With 3.78 gears, you will have about 14:1 gears in first, and 2.70:1 gears in high. Plenty of torque multiplication down low, and about 2300 rpm on the freeway.
