My admittedly old bottle of rainx just ran out, mid window. I bought a new bottle which was yellow but said "windshield wax" on it. I started applying it and it WAS wax, with a lot of rubbing and complete with the heavy white residue which ended up all over my dark green paint. The company changed hands, I guess, with the address and etc. on the bottle were different. That old stuff was the easiest in the world to use and worked like a mother, pretty much the last product that fit that description that I've used that stayed unmolested for years. The stuff still works great for rain, but bring several rags to clean up. Anybody else notice this? Or am I just being a crabby old guy? 409 Bob
I also have a quite old bottle. ($7 never lasted so long, and gave the results rain x does) I hadn't heard of anything new but it always left some haze behind. I think maybe you picked up a cheap rip-off?
Probably the same thing that happened to Gumout carb cleaner--it got "environmentally friendly", and consequently doesn't clean a carb any more than WD-40 does.
The stuff worked great but the bottle I had lain on the carpet on the way home from a show leaked and dissolved all the loop on my carpet in a three inch circle. I am still pissed.
I just bouoght a new bottle here in Texas at Wal Mart and I'm almost certain i saw it on the end cap at O'Rielly's Auto Parts
Did it say Rain-X on it, or was it like the Dollar Store brand "Rain-Y" ? It sounds like you bought some other product. It seems like every car I put Rain-X on the stuff just turns into a smear when I run the wipers.
BOB...the same people who buy RAIN-X, also buy BOTTLE WATER. i use tap water and windshield wipers. they serve me well and don't cost 1 damn cent...POP.
Some of us dont have funtioning wipers, been there done that!!, And my windshield on my daily is so beat to shit the water wont wipe right even with good wipers so i need a bottle for it now
Rain-x is a miracle fluid in my opinion. For those that don't care for it or don't think it works, you aren't using it correctly. First of all, clean the windows first. Not with the rain-x. Use some window cleaner and make sure your windows are spotless. Then smear the rain-x into the glass really good in tight little circles like you are waxing the surface. Keep smearing it in over and over and you will notice that it sort of goes from being on the surface of the glass to sort of being "one with the glass" I know that sounds weird, but you will notice it start to become smooth looking as it finally "mates" with the glass. Let it haze over and dry for 5-15 minutes. Take a SMALL amount of water on a clean dry cloth and wipe the residue off the glass, polishing it out to a shine. There is a perfect "in between" amount to do this. Don't use too much water and remove the rain-x, but don't use too little and leave rain-x that can smear. Buff to a shine and get ready to FORGET your wipers when it rains... This all sounds way more difficult than it is. When you get it right, there is NOTHING like it. I used to travel 50-60K miles per year for business and this stuff is gold. By the way, funny story... I found small bottles of rain-x on clearance years ago. They were like .25 cents each and I bought about 30-40 of them. They lasted me the better part of 15 years but then I noticed that there were little rocks forming in the bottles. STRANGE! Ended up throwing the rest away. Hope the good stuff is still available. Will have to take a look in the local stores tonight.
The real stuff is still out there. I get mine at Wally World. I use it for the Caddy, wipers don't work. Like redline toys said, when put on correctly there is nothing like it.
409 Bob: Rain x does have a "new product" windshield wax. If you prefer the good ol stand by here is the NAPA part # NCB 112011. I personally like the old stuff better. My store still has 5 bottles and my local Distribution Center has 44. So I think you should be able to get it still in your neck of the woods, hope this helps!
Thanks Guys, I guess I need some of that on my glasses. I will widen my search to some decent stores and look for the "Original" which this bottle doesn't say. Should have known better when it said "shake well". On the rainx web site they have rainx wiper fluid for the really lazy, and no mention of the "Windshield Wax". I guess it was a short lived product which they sold at Orchard and other chains. It does get wet here in San Francisco in the mornings. Thanks again, 409 Bob
Rain-X is wax dissolved in alcohol. You may have an old bottle that the alcohol has dissolved. Also, you have to apply it often, depending on how much rain and number of car washes. I can't live without it.
Yep, Rain-X is awesome. I used to use it on my tow truck and would run all winter long without even turning the wipers on.
Well, Pop, I don't buy bottled water, but I do buy, and use, Rain-X...I've been running it on my Stude's windshield (and side windows) for over 25 years... and NEVER once needed windshield wipers in a heavy, or light, rainstorm...matter of fact, when you run at nite in a rainstorm, with Rain-X on your windshield, you can't even tell it's raining, except for the rain drumming on the roof. YOU should try it ...who knows, you might even like bottle water... R-
not true, wipers cost, blade refills are not free, and I pay every month for water and sewer, neither are free, even if you are on a well, the pump will require electricity which costs. Now back to the thread and enough with the worthless replies. Rain X is awesome and we still have the OG stuff here. One day I'll put an electric wiper motor in the 57, until then it's Rain X for me.
my local parts store carries rain x still. they also sell rain x washer solvent which has rain x in it and its orange in color. i use that in my daily ride and it works good.
Is there anyone else out there who finds the water droplets blowing up the glass distracting and or hynotizing???? I used to use it but found myself watching the water more than watching the road. Not good. I got some of their winter windshiel washer/deicer mix for a door prize, and used it. Found myself doing the same thing again. Up here inthe northeast, you can't go without using your wipers. the other thing I found is it really shortens wiper life.
